In the last few days I've committed a slew of minor tweaks to the amsynth code, and it's now very close to being ready for release - so let me know if there are any outstanding issues!
Right now briandc's banks 1 - 4 are included with it. I will most likely update this with the latest banks too, unless packagers feel banks should be kept out of the amsynth tarball?
You might want to include Bank 5 rather than Bank 4, since Bank 4 has only 35 patches in it which are new. I could add those 35 to Bank 6, rename it Bank 4 and upload it so you can re-insert it. That way each Bank doesn't have repeats..
That is, of course, if you choose to include them in the tarball.

Yoshimi tarball includes banks too and haven't heard any packagers about it. Debian includes them as a separate yoshimi-data package.
Happy new year btw and looking forward to a new release!

I decided to make a website that can be used to showcase various linux-based synths. For now it's all to be decided, but the URL is:
www.amsynth.com
If people here have suggestions about how it would be useful, let me know. I'm open to ideas!
At this stage, the banks for amSynth which are complete are:
Banks 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. (The sounds in Bank 4 can be found in the other banks.)
That's 640 sounds.. some repeats, I'm aware; but the last banks have some interesting new "colors" to them, and some effects that are kind of interesting!
I still haven't explored the multi-instance capabilities very much; but I was running 4 instances the other day, with very low CPU-- well under 50%. So there's a lot more that can be done, using this type of setup.

Well, I'm test-driving amSynth in 3 instances, and performance is very very good. CPU at about 20% while playing (running htop).
And the sounds keep coming out of this thing! Here's a sample of a 3-instance trial, called "SpaceConcert" (with Calf plug-in to collect all the outputs, and add a bit of digital delay for fun) :

Nice ! I already liked bank 1 to 4 as they showed off some capabilities of amsynth I wouldn't have thought it was capable of.
Bank 6 is a must have and I agree with you that even if some sounds might ressemble some others from the previous bank it has a unique touch. Very inspiring.
You totally have me changed my mind about amsynth and I mean it in a good way !

Thanks, DoosC!
When I first started with amSynth, it didn't have any of the added features that now make it possible to create some really neat stuff. The more Nick adds, the more power it has. And, I think the big advantage is running multiple instances. In fact, Although Bank 7 is already at about 35 new sounds, I'm more interested in making multiple-instance sounds.
So along with Bank 7 (here's the link, but only the first 30-35 sounds are new:
http://ubuntuone.com/3U1rioPOU5LpFbAtyBCI7i ), I'm going to start posting a bank that will have several sounds listed in groups, like "salad1, salad2, salad3." So in this example, you would open three instances, and load one of these 3 salad sounds into each synth. When I record (I use Audacity), I open Calf plug-ins and connect the audio-out of the three amSynth instances to Calf, and Calf to the audio system. That way, Audacity can connect to Calf instead, and catch the audio of all 3 synths together.
Using several synths gives the possibility of layering sounds, and I'm hoping to work towards some more natural instrument imitations this way.
Anyway, thanks for the compliments! My passion for tweaking has been relit, and amSynth is really starting to show its "personality" I think.
Let's hope for more features, and more sounds--- and to hear the music it inspires!!

There's more sounds on Bank 7 now, including one called "Taurus3" that I made a demo of here, with Calf digital delay to add a nice effect:

OK,
instead of using the links above, everything's a lot easier now. Just go to
http://www.amsynth.com/amsynth.html
and you'll see 5 banks at the bottom. Right-click to save them, and put them in the
folder. That should be everything in the banks, except a few of a future bank.
Remember to be using the newest version of amSynth, which is available in the KXStudio repos, or in the link to Nick's development page, posted earlier here.

Hey everyone,
I noticed that wSynth doesn't load user patchbanks correctly (at least not on my machine..). -Anyone know a way to solve this?
