Alsa_in, alsa_out questions. . .

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Alsa_in, alsa_out questions. . .

Post by junebug »

Just wondering if anyone has used this to add additional soundcards. I found a webpage that said it wasn't intended for recording. If that's not the case then what is it intended for? I have a delta 1010 but when i heard about it was curious so i tested it out by adding a usb mixer. It recorded ok although the recorded material was slightly delayed in relation to my delta 1010. I thought that it was supposed to look after delays, sync, etc? Is using this likely to make your set up unstable? Would like to hear from other people who have used it, how you've used it and your findings?

Ok, just tested it there. Here is what i am using to connect the mixer up to alsa_in -

/usr/bin/alsa_in -d hw:1 -n3

Jack is set up at 1024 frames (i use hardware monitoring), 2 periods at 44.1 sample rate. Distro is Dreamstudio on quad core (2.40GHz) with 3 GB RAM.

I have just done a test and it's recording ok but it is being recorded 2747 samples later on the timeline in Ardour than my delta 1010's inputs. Is there any way to counter this delay? It's easy to slide it over but i'm wondering if there's a way to not have to worry about this in the first place. Is there something i can add to make it compensate for the delay or is this to be expected?

i own a xenyx302USB mixer, I use alsa_out to output my sounds to another soundcard, route that audio to an effects processor (pocketpod), then loop it back to one of the inputs on my xenyx302USB mixer http://instagram.com/p/PCOJ58sRBC/, with the setup, I get to apply effects to a "copy" of my output, and route it back to the master mix.

the exact command I use is

alsa_out -j sc2 -d hw:0 -c 2 -r 44100 -q 4 -p 4

where
"sc2" is the input port I connect my jack readable clients to
"hw:0" is the interface of the other soundcard

Not experiencing any delays between the other soundcard and my xenyx though, they seem to be perfectly syncd even when playing long tracks via mixxx..

I have not tried recording via alsa_in, I might one of these days though.

Thinking that my once-much-loved RME card might as well be in a PCI slot instead of on the shelf, I gave alsa_out/alsa_in a quick spin. I just copied examples of the command lines from the net and, from error messages, I must have got some of the periods/frames stuff completely wrong, but ...there they were in KXStudio Catia and, when connected up, there was the sound from the speakers!

The perceived complexity was putting me off. Turned out that the thing to do was to jump in and try it. the details can be sweated out later :)

Only tested playback.
