[Fix inside] CMT on Debian64/Studio64/whatever64

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

[Fix inside] CMT on Debian64/Studio64/whatever64

Post by DioXide »

First off, I'd like to apologize for the many rules I'm sure I'm breaking by doing this, but I'm too busy and hurried to do it correctly, (actually I was almost too busy to do it at all), the person who was supposed to be doing this disappeared, and no one else has taken responsibility.... So here I am. I know this is not quite the place, but I really have no time to mess with mailing lists. That said:

As you may know, the CMT (Computer Music Toolkit) is outdated and broken on 64-bit Debian (and derivates).
(Not) Attached is a fixed cmt.so. It's also a newer version than the one in the repos (this is 1.16).
Just replace the cmt.so in your /usr/lib/ladspa with this one. I didn't test all the plugins, but at least Freeverb and the delays (what I wanted) work.

For those who prefer to compile, just change this line in your Makefile:
CFLAGS = $(INCLUDES) -Wall -fno-strict-aliasing -O3 -fPIC
Good luck

hey!

thanks for your post. But as a first rule in the linux world:
don't post binaries that are to be installed in the system directories.

Your indicating the compilation flag is a nice one, so I assume you're a nice guy :)
But please, flush your binary into oblivion, thanks.

Done. But mind you, that's why newcomers don't like Linux - they want the easy (ie. hard binary) way out of the problems they inevitably face... (Personal experience, I've converted lots of people)

Of course, the *real* easy way is for us to push the patch upstream so fixed versions will find their way to the distro's, instead of posting a binary on some online forum :).

Have you mailed Richard Furse yet? http://www.ladspa.org/cmt/ mentions his email address.

thanks DioXide :)
I understand your point.

I have the feeling that newcomers don't necessarily like linux because it's just different from what they experienced before, it's like learning a new language or new skill, there's this thing called "adaptation" or even "effort" that our lazy nature tends to be against  It has nothing to do with linux or other OSes at the end.

But coming back to my request, it's just that providing a binary that needs to be installed by root to a root system directory is OK when it comes from a certified repository (gpg key, etc). But a binary posted on a forum, especially from a first post of a new member, well, you understand that I'd rather decline the offer :D

This said, thanks for the tip :)

Yes I understand your point too, the thing is that end users have no reason to know how to compile anything, the solution, as raboof said, is to patch the thing and update the repos... The problem is that one Anand Kumria (the package mantainer) abandoned Debian years ago (v1.16 came out in 2007, the repos still have 1.15) and no one has taken his place. What do you do in this case? Even if Richard fixed his makefile, Debian would still have the outdated version.

I can't find any report of other distros having this problem, so I'm assuming it's just Debian.

Anyway, I never thought of contacting Richard, I was under the impression that he quit a while ago too :| .. Guess I'll try

Hm, seems there hasn't been an awful lot of activity lately - but who knows? Can't hurt to try.

As for getting a more recent version into Debian, perhaps you could drop the Debian Multimedia Maintainers team a note?
