Jconv amp/cab sample

Post by funkmuscle »

I've been cpmparing the sound of guitar amp/cabs IR files with jconv and vsts.
The vsts gave me a closer amp sound than the jconv until I figured that on the vsts, the signal should be completely wet. So I found out that by setting the delay to 500 and the offset to 1400 in a jconv *.conf file, you get a fully wet signal...(duh, it was explained in the jconv demo folder but I like to do things the hard way..)

anyway, this is a sample of my 10watt PeaVey Rage premap out>jconv>ardour.
I think the IR file is a soldano amp/cab.

Please excuse the sloppiness, the out of tune guitar, and how short the sample is... Don't have the time..

Nice, but really short . :)
So now we waiting for some longer part's heavy guitar sounds :D

To the jconv settings, I think you missleaded in the interpretation of this settings. It isn't in general 500 1400, the offset depend's hardly on the used IR files. It cut the first samples from the file (simply dont use them). Often in this first part are unwanted impulse's (switch mic on, etc.), so it can be nice to cut the first samples, but it have nothing to do with wet/dry sound from jconv. The length did the same for the end of the IR-file.
Try those settings with realy small IR-files, jconv wont start because the end off file is reached befor a Impulse were read.
Helpfull to find the right offset, can be a tool like vamp, to analysis the waveform and find the part you wont to use. But like I say, it isn't a general switch from dry to wet.

Thanks. Would be nice if you could find some more time and share some different sounds with description how to get them! :)

O yeah, there is a tuner in rakarrack and of course you can find scales on the internet ;) so you can have your guitar in tune if you want ;)

That's what I mean... keFIR vst plugin or Boogex or sIR all have controls for that in the interface. That's what we need. At the guitarmodelling site, this is how they say to use keFIR:
KeFIR is a simple VST that allows your to load impulse responses.
Just click on "Load", select you impulse response (a .wav file) then set the "Mix" parameter to 100% (this is important) and set the length as you want (more length = more cpu consumption). Don't set it too short or you'll end up bypassing the impulse. Most impulse responses (like the GuitarHack's ones) have the tail cutted, so set the length to the max is useless. Just leave it as is when you load the impulse.
Set the "Gain" knob as you want.
That way you see the length of the .wav and you adjust and the mix at 100% mean completely wet.
Also brummer, you're right, I got zero sound with small IR files....
So that's what I mean, we need an interface so we can see the .wav length, adjust to it, set it 100% and apply gain.
keFIR gave me an awesome sound for guitar.

studio32, hardware tuner works best for me and oh yeah, it would help to if I ever get time to put on new strings.....
Thanx guys.

Okay, nice hint. That I can include to the jconv settings widget, giving Info over the file length and choose the part to use.

yeah but you instigated this one studio32... Good stuff now we got our man brummer fixing us up...
good stuff guys. :D

Hey brummer, how do you use vamp to get the offset, delay, etc?
I don't even know how to launch sonic visualiser.... Again, another app developed for linux, then Mac and Windows yet the only manual is for Windows.

so I guess you meen some thing like that ? :D

I send a first preview to let you know that I'am working on it. I will include the offset and length selector now, so that it is posible to select the part from the file to use with jconv. The wave view widget work's for 1 and 2 channel files.

to be continued . . .

dude that is beautiful... can't wait for the final....
With this setup, will the option be there for 100% wet and 100% dry and in between?
Some IRs are suggested that they run at 100% wet.
also, can the gain go past 1?

@ Brummer, nice :)
Maybe it's nice if such a configure gui will also work outside guitarix. So you can use it as a Gui for Jconv and inside guitarix

thanks studio32,
yea, when it is ready, we will see. . .
I build it as several C++ class`s, so it will be easy to include it in other (Gtk) app's or make a standalone app from it.

hi funkmuscle
It need a litle more time,. . .

Like I sayed befor, there isn't a dry/wet switch within jconv, but you know you can drive it dry/wet from guitarix.
Mabee it help when the gain can past 1 :D done.

Okay, it's in guitarix svn now. Please test it, search for bug's. If you find some, please let me know.

Here is a short discription how to use it:

You can make selection with the left mouse button, press the left mouse button were you wont the offset, move the mouse (with the button pressed) to the point were you wont the length.
You can move the selection with the middle mouse button (press the mouse weel).
you can delete the selection with the right mouse button, and you can change the length with the right mouse button, when you press and move it.
The settings for offset and length will be displayed as tooltip, when you move the mouse in the wave view widget and are persistent when you reload a file or a new file.

The gain can set now up to 5.
have fun

Hallo brummer,

wunderbar!
I will test that tonight, as I finally have some time off at home.
I hope you have in mind to decouple this widget from the whole guitarix one of these days ;)

Tschuess!
