Cleveland Rocks hard in Ohio!

Post by jitup »

hey yall,
I joined a bit ago, but I am still new and this seemed like it good be fun!
I am a currently a young fledgeling producer (mainly recording, but I do make some beats) and I am still a student. As most of you know, young musicians are always broke, and being a college student doesn't help any! I was origanlly drawn to linux due to the freeness and powerful software (origanly I just wanted ardour) but I was converted and I am currently trying to reformat the W word out of my life. now for my gear... It probably isn't as impressive as most of your guys stuff but it is pretty good for a 17 year old.
I have a
1974 silverface fender twin reverb (my baby and prized posetion)
crate glx 212 (tone not so great but its load)
crate vintage club 30 all tube ( surprisingly sound pretty good)
Crate 100 watt base amp w/ 15 inch speaker
Alvarez electric bass
fender mex. coustom (my other baby and it sounds better than the new americans)
ibanez ex
Ibanez as-83 or es-83 (google it, its pretty)
rare 80's washburn designed by PRS himself (only 700 produced)
shure sm57 (I need more mics)
takamine acoustic
boss gt-6 (its ok for swirly effects)
modded mt-2 (ok, but I still can't get the tone I want out of it)
danelectro wha/fuzz (supprisingly sounds REALLY good)
a rats nest of cables
EMU-0404 usb 2.0 (dose the job and to my supprise was compatible right out of the box with ubuntu 8.10)
my desktop, 3.6 GHZ AMD, 3GB of ram (soon to be 8 when I switch to 64 bit) dual monitors, nice ATI card
my free laptop Gatway 1.6 GHZ pentium 4, 512mb ram max, ubuntu 8.10 soon to be testing my own flav of linux with ZombieLord Studio (don't google it, I have not posted any thing at all about it yet) It is pretty much ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04 (after stable release) that is fully optimized to run audio production software. My key focus is ease of use for no nothing about linux musicians (ie me a couple of weeks ago) and effecieny, so it can run on slow systems (my laptop, which out performs my desktop if I have ubuntu on the lappy, and xp on the desk) still working on finding the most effecient rt kernel to intigrate (ubuntu 8.10 seems to be working best for me), considering using enlightenment desktop enviroment, but might stick with Gnome. I may also be oppening an all linux studio with one of my friends, (he has some real nice gear) It won't be anything major, just a basement soundproofed and turned studio to record demos cheap. thats it!

I work VERY hard to get my stuff (started at my first job on a farm for $3 an hour when I was 12) I also got some crazy good deals, like my twin was $200! (it is in mint condition, the guy just liked me)

Music, well I will record and produce anything, but the stuff I enjoy to play is blues based rockish, through my twin with a touch of reverb. I also like to play ska, folk, jazz, and even metal. I am going to jam with this cool garage rock band towmarrow, maybe I will grab my note book and record a song or so!

also, I knew I would forget something for my gear..... I have an old 60's all tube M100 series Hammond organ! I love it and it was only $20 at a garge sale! I am finishing revamping an old Leslie unit to use with it.

Did you know Fluxbox ? ... a really light desktop environment, always recommendable for realtime systems :)

I forgot to mention my old acordian and broken trumpet!
I have some stuff =D most musician forums I belong to, I have nothing compared to them! They have multiple strats, teles, gibsons, marshalls pure pro gear stuff. I was sorta suprised by the minimalist aproach by you guys! I do have to say, your music is better than the stuff off of the other forums! also , like I said before, I have gotten some pretty insane good deals!!! for example, I might be getting a $FREE$ TEAC reel to reel recorder. you may say "why wold you waste your time with a piece of outdated gear like that?" the answer my friends is tone! I would not be recording soley on that, I would be using a hybrid style, first record and master everything to my DAW at 24bit 96 sample rate, plug the outputs of my sound card into the inputs of the TEAC, (1/4 inch jack) record at the highest speed to tape (or lower if I want the sound to degrade to get that 60's garage rock band sound) then bounce back to my DAW at 24 bit 96 sample rate from the TEAC into an all tube Macintosh preamp and amp. Tweak eq and other stuff a bit, downgrade to 16bit 44.1 Mhz and BAM! I get the ease of use of my DAW, with the warm tone and harmonics of tube and tape! Both of best worlds!!! lets just hope it actually works that way =D
