Hello, from New York

Post by RobSoko315 »

Hey everyone,

To give a little background of me, I'm 17 years old, live on Long Island - New York, and play trumpet, guitar and a little bit of piano. With that said, I've been a Mac user for a few years now and have been considering a new computer. However, with the recent economic state of America (and the rest of the world) Mac is looking rather expensive. So, I installed Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on my computer. Overall, I like it better, but I miss Logic, which is why I came here.

Here's what I know so far: I downloaded qjackctl, and use that as a server for Hydrogen drum machine. I also know of programs called Rosegarden and Ardour. My questions are: What's the difference between the two? What other programs are out there? How do I get started with them? Do I have to download sample libraries and things like that to hear anything?

These are pretty typical noobie quesitons, so I'm sure there's a link to answer all my questions, but I can't find it.

Thanks,

-Rob-

Hi Rob, welcome!

May I ask how you found us?

trumpet, guitar and a little piano, cool! What kind of music?

Here's what I know so far: I downloaded qjackctl, and use that as a server for Hydrogen drum machine. I also know of programs called Rosegarden and Ardour. My questions are: What's the difference between the two?
Ardour is a DAW, specialized in recordings and mixing (Midi is planned).
Rosegarden is a music studio tool, a midi sequencer with also recording and notation editor possibilities.

You know, with Jack (qjackctl) you can connect any app with jack support with another app with jack support. So you can also record midi in Ardour using Rosegarden for instance.
What other programs are out there? How do I get started with them? Do I have to download sample libraries and things like that to hear anything?

These are pretty typical noobie quesitons, so I'm sure there's a link to answer all my questions, but I can't find it.
Check out our wiki, especially the newbie part. I recommend you to install a multimedia distro like 64studio (beta now) or ubuntustudio.

To get sound in Rosegarden it is useful to install dssi plugins.
Other interesing apps might be:
- qtractor (midi sequencer/ recording)
- linuxsampler (gig sampler)
- zynaddsubfx (synth)
- tuxguitar (tablature)
- LMMS (sort of FLstudio for Linux)
etc.

edit: if you want to buy a new computer, make sure the hardware (especially the soundcards ;) ) are supported by Linux. See the hardware part on this forum and in our wiki

If your coming from Logic Pro don't expect the same level of features and power and ease .Apple knew what they were doing when they bought Logic..they knew it would sell computers..Linux has a lot of good apps..Ardour,Rosegarden,Hydrogen,LinuxSampler..but i dont think any of them come close to the big boy commercial packages.Samplitube,Pro Tools,Cubase,Sonar.etc.Maybe Im wrong..but i dont thin you can have totally free software and have it be on same level of a commercial app..It takes money and resources to develop a applications on the level of cubase,samplitube,etc..

I think you're partly right. But I think if you knows Linux better and better, you will be able to get good results. Jack gives you a whole bunge of possibilities. And if need you can use Vst plugins using WineHQ within a week with Ardour 2.8! There are also commercial apps for Linux, like some VST plugins and Energyxt and Renoise for example...

I think ardour comes pretty close to some of the daws, I am comming from cubase and protools, and the only thing that is a real downfall is the not naitive vst support. I personally love ardour compared to cubase and sonar if you are just looking at the daw. I find it VERY similar to Protools, I don't want to sound ignorant, but it seems sorta like a copy of protools, but some features are better, and others are non existant, but you can't beat it for the price! Ardour is the reason I switched to linux.
Welcome, I am new too! I also play the gitfiddle and trumpet w/ a bit o organ! Logic is some pretty tight stuff isn't it? If you own a copy try running it in wine to see if it will work
