what is the best music produciton distro?

Post by jitup »

Hello, I am new to linux. the reason I recentley decided to make the switch was because of ardour. I like it better than cubase, and it seems pretty equal to protools, but lacks a few features, but the price easily makes its flaws overlook able. can't beat free (I am a music student, so I will donate after I have some money)
what is the absolute best distro. for linux concerning audio recording and production? I pretty much want LMMS, ardour, and what ever else I don't know about but is extremely useful. It needs to be light on my cpu though. for my portable rig, I am running a 2002 gateway w/ 1.6ghz pentium 4 and 512 mb of ram. I relize this will only handle a couple of tracks befor it goes goofy (at least thats what it does on xp running cubase LE) . On my good computer I have dual monitors, is that going to be an issue? I was looling at JAD, and A/V linux, A/V linux seems a bit dated, and couldn't find that much on JAD, but it looks more recent. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

Hi,
Welcome!

I suggest you to wait for the next release of 64studio. It's based on Ubuntu LTS (hardy) and in beta right now.

I was looking at that. I am not sure if I want to run the beta. does anybody happen to know if it is compatible with the EMU-0404 usb 2.0 card? I know ubuntu 8.10 is (thats what I am currently running, but I am having too many problems with the update manager)

no wait for the stable release. You better ask specific hardware questions for a certain distro on the mailinglist of 64studio... It could be that someone here also knows the answer though..

i distro-hopped for a while trying to the find best "production" distro, but then i realised the best distro to use for production is the one you know the best. the better you know it, the more control over its stability you have and the quicker you can solve problems if you have them.
