Hi from Ontario, Canada

Post by chichi »

Hi there! I'm new to Linux, and I'm a bit nervous about stepping into this complex world of computer music. If I didn't have very specific goals and sounds in mind, I could never do this. It would be very encouraging if someone would direct me to the right programs to use. What I want to do is begin with a melody, play around it with loops and paint with different sound textures, and recorded sounds and add some vocals and other recorded instruments. Here is what I am hoping to find here 1. A program that will initially allow me to record my melody through midi keyboard (I have people to help with the physical setup, I just want to pick the right program). 2. An automatic chord creator tool (I do know my music theory but I don't particularly want to be bogged down with it while I'm trying to figure this computer stuff out) 3. A program that will be able to download and allow utilization of different VSTi's and loops.. 4. A program that will let me just play around and add have fun with different sounds, loops, effects, and recorded sounds, and then polish it up. Any suggestions? Many many thanks.

HI

1) take a look at Qtractor
2) use an song which already excists... and learn music theory! ;)
You could use MMA or Impro-Visor or band in a box using WineHQ... (not 100% ideal options though for a starter...)
3) Take also a look at LMMS and FST

And check out our WIKI and use the search function on this forum board
