Hi everyone,
First, a little shoutout to rooz at Debian forums - thanks for the link.
Um, where to start? I've been a musician since 1975 - taught guitar for a few years, lots of bands - lots of clubs, some touring, built my own guitars (8 so far) and tube amps - self-released two cds (2000, 2007), and I build pipe organs by day. Since May 08, I have fallen in love with linux.
I'm severely old-school about a lot of things, and love the challenge of a minimal system on an old box (PIII). Right now I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.1 w/rt kernel, and I have a great fondness for Traverso (I love its clean/minimal interface). I tend to have a pretty clear vision of what my final mixes should sound like, so I almost never use realtime effects, instead preferring to write them to the WAV destructively. This is also a good way to go if you have limited CPU/RAM.
I'm sort of over Ubuntu though, and will eventually switch all of my boxes to Debian. I'm really impressed with its stability/speed. The downside of Debian, of course, is its lack of rt support. I've read of people getting rt kernels from other places though (Mepis, Pure:dyne, 64studio, sidux, etc), and making it work in Debian.
I'm only moderately tech-savy, with a wide pragmatic streak (I just wanna press the red record button).
Thanks for allowing into what looks like a great forum.
