How many virtual synths are out there??

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

How many virtual synths are out there??

Post by briandc »

Hi everyone,
I came across a link here a few days ago, that went to a website with a whole list of virtual synths available.
Now, I can't find it for the life of me!! Aargh..

So it's quicker to just ask: can anyone give me links to virtual synths (free and non) that are available for Linux? I have a feeling there's a whole slew..

Thanks!
brian

Thanks khz.
But there was another page, too, with some synths that I can't find on your links. (and I can't find the thread on this forum where I discovered them..)

Has anyone used any of the softsynths on this site?

http://lesitedeburnie.free.fr/lalistedeburnie4-en.html

I imagine they require Wine if not made specifically for Linux. (I haven't tried Wine yet, and wanted to hear opinions..)

I've used some of them. Almost all are for Win/Mac, so your mileage will surely vary when running them under Wine.

It is worth noting that KVR lists almost 1000 free VST synthesizers. I'm an ardent champion of Linux audio, but at least in that domain we have an enormous long way to go.

Unless of course you've already mastered Csound. :)

Best,

Hi StudioDave,
like yourself, I too am an ardent Linux fan. I began using Linux back in 2007, and by 2009 I had completely abandoned Windows. (I've never used Mac.)
I just love the "atmosphere" of Linux: all the cooperation and assistance, a strong learning enviornment, and all at a "grassroots" level.

I haven't used Csound (or is it a programming language?). My school education was completely irrelevant to anything "IT" related, so I have lots of questions about just about everything.

And the world of digital music is just wonderful. Oddly, I only discovered it now, even though I knew that some were already using it a decade ago. But finally I'm "in" it, and it's wonderful to see. In fact, I'd love to learn to program, and to help contribute to an audio project for Linux. So much has been done, and I want to give back in a concrete way. (I could donate money, I guess..)

Is KVR a website?
I'm going to install wine tonight, and see how it behaves in Ubuntu Studio. I'm also thinking about ungrading to KXStudio..

In case anyone is interested, here's a good interview/Q&A with Linus Torvalds :

I've always admired Linus. His "hobby" has been one of the best things to ever happen for me.

It's what used to be called a "waveform compiler". Yes, it is a programming language specifically for music & sound composition :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Csound

I use it for writing very strange stuff. :)

Same here. I graduated from high school in 1969, my interests were strictly musical. My background has nothing in it to indicate a latent tech-head - aside from being a ham radio operator for a while - and my training has been musical rather then technical. The interest in computers started in 1985 when I first heard a MIDI system make music. From that time forward I've been dedicated to making music on the desktop.

Money is good, and programmers love it when you send 'em some. :)

Take your time, ask questions, try things, break things, try again, breathe. Repeat until comatose.

LM is a good group, lots of experience here. You might also consider joining the Linux Audio Users mail list :

Is KVR a website?
http://www.kvraudio.com/

Yes, it's a site primarily dedicated to audio plugins, including those for Linux, and it has a good music presentation forum (the Music Cafe) if you'd like to get your stuff heard by other users, especially users not into Linux audio production.

Hi StudioDave,
thanks for the links and suggestions. I signed up for the Linux Audio Users mailing list, too.

This forum has really been good; there's a lot to learn, sometimes I feel I don't have enough time to read up on all that's been developing both in Linux and the world of digital music creation. I kind of dropped out of computer "stuff" after the days of PET computers and Atari. It just didn't seem like it would become anything. Obviously I was wrong. And so now I'm doing a bit of "catch up," and even thinking of learning a bit about programming. I'd love to be able to "give back" and participate more, time permitting. Learning to program Csound, as you mentioned, might be an interesting area. I'm open to suggestions. KXStudio is really amazing; if I had the know-how I'd love to chip in..

I've been on the virtual synth hunt.. I found the most incredible piano VST for free (!) here:
http://www.supremepiano.com/product/piano1.html

Absolutely amazing. Using KXStudio's Festige, you can enjoy this amazing piano!

Enjoy!
