freqrush introducing freqrush ...

Post by freqrush »

Hi I'm freqrush,

I spent too much money on an official cubase vst 3.5 software pack back in 1999 when I got my first computer. Since 2004 I've got access to the www and cubase vst 3.5 wasn't supported anymore by then so the work I was doing to build a cubase driver with dmaker for my Korg X3 and Roland SPD-11 was wasted.
I also made some vst-plugins with synthedit but because it's not open-source, I doubt if this will have a long-term future like dmaker didn't have either. And then there was also this dman2044 sound card that I 'd bought, but wasn't supported under anything above windows '98

So I decided to stick with FLOSS as much as possible now.

Now I have a Delta1010, midisport 2x2 and BCR2000
and I'm trying to write a driver for JSynthLib for the SPD-11 (KorgX3 is already supported well 8) )

I've also made SynthEdit run with wine but couldn't do "save as vst", so vst will be something from my past.
Nice to see there's a developer's corner here :P

My set up at home is a '70 premier drumkit with a fame drum mic set >> 4 Tapco Blend6 mixers >> delta1010 >> a computer and kernel (that's always changing) >> delta1010 >> truth B2031A monitors.

Welcome!

Interesting projects.. I am also interested in drumming.. I have a roland td-6v e-drum and now I'd like to get a keyboard midi controller (m-audio keyrig 49 maybe).. so, at this moment, I am mainly focussed at midi and software synths.. hope we can share knowledge and experiences

There's a driver already in JSynthLib for the Roland TD-6, I'd say try it out if you haven't ... (click on 'synths supported' to see the list)
I've experimented with JSynthLib and my KorgX3 and it works very well. JSynthLib uses SysEx messages to change the sounds in the KorgX3, so I don't have to use the old knobs of the Korg, some are not working anymore so that's great. With JSynthLib, I can also save each program as a sysex message, and banks too. Then I can compose a bank with all my favorite programs and send it back to the KorgX3
For the SPD-11, that would be great too, to have an overview over the settings of a selected pad and being able to change them with the mouse. As I'm thinking of it, a mixer panel to mix the drumsounds would be nice. Why didn't Roland provide this standard anyway ? Who can make a decent mix of up to 32 drum sounds into a stereo output, simply by using some buttons on a panel ? I should be able to connect a midi controller to each sound's level, but that's not the case with the SPD-11. Only when it's in edit mode, and by using SysEx messages.
I'm collecting what I find about the SPD-11: here

BTW, the keyrig 25 of a friend was supported out of the box when I connected it to 64studio, just like the BCR2000 and not like the midisport 2x2 who needs firmware drivers to be loaded (but that's not really hard to fix) .

Do you use the BCR2000 with Ardour? If so, how do you like it? I've been looking at the BCF2000s on eBay for a couple of weeks ago and I've been thinking I wanted to add one to my setup. I'd be interested in getting a first-person perspective on how it works.

Hi ntnunk,
I didn't spend really much time with the BCR yet as I just have it since about two months and didn't do any serious recording job since then.
At power up of the BCR2000, it's automatically added to qjackctl's connections. Just connect it to the ctl & mcu in/out of Ardour and adjust Ardour's options to use a generic midi controller surface and send feedback.
When you hold down control and click on a controller in Ardour (be it volume, pan, fx send, a controller of a ladspa plug ...), there's a message poppin' up "move controller now" . I turn a knob and the controller in Ardour follows the knob. So that's easy. When I just click on the pop up with the mouse, the controller gets disconnected. Also Ardour's start/stop/rewind buttons work with BCR2000's MMC buttons. And saving a project saves the controller numbers so you don't have to reconnect each knob to get on with a project the day after.
To my experience, it's as if this thing was built to just work with Ardour ...

And there's BC*2000 yahoogroups mailing list.

Thanks for the info. I read somewhere that Ardour's control surface integration code was actually written against and tested with a BC*2000 so I guessed it probably worked pretty well. I think I'll pick one up!
