Hi Falk,
do the Loomer products not work any longer after a certain period? I haven't used Aspect for months and now I don't get any sound..

Just a quick question:
when booting, I occasionally get a message that says that the /tmp directory was not found, and needing to wait until loaded (something like that, anyway). Is this a serious issue? I always just wait a few seconds, and it then proceeds normally, so I figured it probably is a bad wire connection or some other hardware thing. Right?

This has to do with OS's handling of mounting drives. It is a timing issue of the OS wanting to finish booting, but it hasn't finished loading/mounting all the required drives yet. At least I think....

. Regardless...I know that it is harmless...because mine does the same thing

Ok. I thought there was a bad connection in something somewhere. It doesn't always happen, but it often does. But then everything proceeds normally anyway, so I haven't been too worried. But since it sounds like a normal occurence for others, then all's well. Thanks!

I get the same thing with new kernels and my /Shared partition.
I'm not sure why someone decided showing this info/warning was a good idea though, often it will just worry users...
It sure worried me!
Still, I prefer to check when I get a message that begins with "can't find" or "warning" or "error".... It's easy for you programmers, but for me it gets interpreted as "you're about to lose your data!"

A new mystery to solve:
A nice fellow pointed out to me by email that some patches are missing from the ZynaddsubFX synth. Indeed there was an update of Zyn a while back.. so did someone choose to remove certain sounds/banks? Even a couple demos I did for my website used sounds that I can't find anymore!...

Speak to the current Zyn maintainer, I updated the zynaddsubfx instruments from latest git. There was quite a collection there. (I'll tell him about this on IRC)
Some presets have changed banks though, are you sure this is not the case?
If they changed banks, I don't see them anymore. But some banks have definitely gone. I made a post at KVR, I'll see if Paul gets back to me on it..

Ok, here's the update on my luck with Triceratops:
I got it to open fine in Ardour 3. (previous Ardour doesn't seem to have midi track capability for some reason)
And, I was able to use the various patches. (very happy)
However, I wasn't able to record the audio output in Audacity, which only crashed when I tried connecting it to Ardour.
Then I tried Triceratops in QTractor. It opens fine, but it seems to be an older version of Triceratops, which doesn't have the preset selection at the top of the screen. So no presets can be heard except the first one.
I reinstalled Triceratops after deleting what seemed to be a second installation in my home folder. But I can't open it in Ardour 3 anymore, and ZynJackU hangs right at triceratops and won't finish the rescan.
I think Triceratops hates me...

Hi Brian,
I can say that this is not only you, I have the ZynJackU issue too.
Also I tried it with Carla and jalv.gtk but with neither host I can change preset by clicking them on left-side list.
In jalv.gtk I can change presets via the menu but some seem to produce no sound at all (like operatic). Do you have the same issues ?

With jalv I was able to hear the presets. I think the newest version now has a bar at the top (top right), don't bother with the left side list. This new bar at the top lets you make presets and if you click the drop-down space you should see the presets and can use them. I was able to do this successfully in Ardour 3 last night, and I was really happy. But then Qtractor was opening an older version, so I eliminated a folder that I thought contained an older version, but now the new version doesn't work. ....

I was thinking last night about VSTs and synths for linux.
There are many VST synths out there today, and many people make their own synths using non-open-source programs like "SynthEdit."
What if the linux community created something like this? Would it help to get linux users making more synths?
Otherwise, it's really important that developers maintain and improve the few that are available already. I don't know if they are still developing the Calf plugins or not. They're very good, and I use them regularly. The problem is when good apps don't continue being maintained. (That was kind of my reason for thinking it would be good to get a PC setup where you like it, and then not do updates. If I hadn't done the update for ZynaddsubFX I would still have the banks that disappeared.
I used a couple of sounds in this synth to make a song that ended up in a film recently. If I lost that sound, and was asked to do the song again, I wouldn't be able to do it!
Does anyone know of a "SynthEdit" type application for linux? It might be a good way to get more people active in making music apps for linux..

I'm using KXStudio 12.04. It seems to me that some packages (not audio-linked), in my case Texlive and Texmaker stuff, are quite old (2009?). Is there a way, to add more recent versions of this?
