Is there a way to get the vst-lmms package?

I ask this because Synth1, the most popular synth (according to ratings on KVRaudio), which is free (!) doesn't behave well in FeSTige. (the arpeggiator doesn't work, the mono/poly control isn't consistent, and some patches make it crash) And when I voted I gave it a 5 out of 10 (on the Synth1 KVR page). That really hit the hornet's nest. A real instigator I am! Lots of insults there..

Anyway, I thought I'd see if using Synth1 with LMMS as the host would give me better results.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I just read an article where someone commented that Synth1 wasn't working in LMMS correctly. So who knows.. maybe FeSTige is the better of the two after all..!

I tried dssi-vst. The performance isn't any better than FeSTige.

It's strange. Some VST synths interface just fine, arpeggiators and all.. Others (like Synth1) don't. So it must be something in the VST that is missing, or written wrong..

Still, even though it's Windows-based, it would be neat to make it work, since it's the "golden calf" of VST synths (at least on KVR). I even had my vote of 5/10 removed from the site!

But it might be neat, if nothing else, just to make Linux shine all the more.

I'm trying Reaper.. it asks to select the audio device. Should I leave "wave out," or select something else? ASIO? I thought Jack would be listed, but it isn't..

Brief background to this query: a recent trip to the ENT specialist and a hearing test made me aware of how much my poor hearing has deteriorated in the past couple of years, and some playing around with EQ on the PC reveals that there is a shocking amount of cymbal shimmer and tinkling percussion, among other things, that I wasn't noticing not hearing any longer. The answer is to aply EQ to all my listening, and the obvious way to do this sems to be to use Claudia.

For 'real' music listening, my usual player, Aqualung, uses LADSPA plugins, I could just settle for that, but I want to be able to apply the same correction to, eg, YouTube and other music from Firefox. Claudia is a technically neater and more satisfying solution (I hope) and the Calf parametric equalisers have a lovely graphic display which is a great help to those of us who are only learning about this stuff rather late in life.

In 11.04, the Firefox input showed up in Cata as comong from Jack_P. In 12.04, ir seems to come through PulseAudio Jack Sink. Im working in 12.04 for support purposes and because I expect I'll move there in the end.

Cadence is started, minimised, on login. When I start Claudia, I see my device inputs/outputs, the PulseAudio sink and source, and the midi i/o (which doesn't currently concern me).

I add an instance of Calf Jack Host, with a couple of components and wire them up. The final output goes to my device.
I find out how to save the Calf Jack Host settings, and load them automatically on Claudia studio startup

I connect up PulseAudio SInk to the Calf inputs. All is well.

I add an instance of Aqualung; I find out how to start it so that it always connects to the Calf inputs, not direct to the device.

All is well: I can play from YouTube, I can play from Aqualung. I am happy

But I have not been able to solve one problem: When I load/start my saved studio, all I get (correctly connected) is Aqualung, Calf Jack Host, and my device. I do not get any PulseAudio sink, and I do not get any sound from Firefox. The studio xml file contains references to PulseAudio Sink and its connections, but it doesn't happen. The midi i/o is gone too: I found out that adding an instance of a2j restores that, but I didn't need it anyway.

How do I get that PulseAudio sink/source stuff into a saveable/restorable claudia studio?

(Or, if you'd prefer a different question --- how do I get input from Firefox and other non-Jack apps into the Claudia studio?)

This will run and exit right away, but the connections will be there.

It appears to run and exit (state shown as inactive after a moment or two) but there is no Pulse audio stuff shown.

Claudia starts, showing a "new" studio with all that stuff on the screen. I stop that, and load my studio and claudia crashes saying either it can't start jack or can't reset paramaters.

After all that, cadence is blacked out and dead. Enough reboots for one night

How do I get Claudia to load a defined studio at at startup? Command line options?

(Afterthought... do I just not unload the studio before stopping? Here's me thinking stop/unload/quit is like a clean exit...)

But I'm not getting my pulseaudio (Firefox) sound.

It is sort-of working in 11.04, if I tick the Cadence pulse-JACK bridge autostart option --- but not actually, as the sound is all broken up, with or without Claudia.

No, I'm running 12.04 for this, as per original-problem quote. I just went to 11.04 for comparison.

(I think it is getting cadence to start the studio that is the secret, and yes, that is exactly what I wanted . WIll see how it goes.

And if this continues to work well, it will be the single big thing that gets me to use 12.04 day to day (even if I do keep the Narwhale wallpaper just to confuse!).

It probably needs a clean install, being currently a test bed. I'm using MATE, by the way, installed on top of Ubuntu Studio 12.04.

I think you need more than [...] pointing to what is a very important option/opportunity.

Could you make one box on the System panel including the on-startup and default-jack/Ladish options?

If we start a Ladish on startup, then the jack options will be those specified with the studio settings, right?

In that case, Use Cadence Jack settings might be clearer than "default"

These suggestions assume I've understood the intentions correctly, of course!

Everything is going reasonably well now. I just have some minor quibbles with what connects to what on startup, and with remembering configuration changes.

Ladish starts on login. I can then start Claudia. What is the correct, clean way to shut it all down? It feels uncomfortable to just shut the machine down .

Should I unload the studio? Then quit Claudia?

Nothing obscure I just want to make sure processes exit cleanly, saving whatever they need to save.

I have one problem now, which is that config details are not remembered, ie, I set Jack/Firewire-driver to 96,000 in Claudia, and it starts at 48,000. I do the same in Cadence to be sure and it still starts at 48,000. Same with fail/ignore self-connect setting: this is not remembered either.

But, the Jack configurations in Ladish/Claudia are studio-specific, right? And should take priority over anything in the cadence version of the same thing?

Restarting Jack in Cadence sometimes gives me errors of the "Cannot start streaming threads" variety. My hunch is that this is something on the FFADO/Firewire side of things, which is why I have not mentioned it here. It can usually be fixed by disconnecting/reconecting the firewire device, pointing to hardware/drivers problem.

Restarting Jack once Claudia/Ladish is involved is less reliable. It does work sometimes, but regularly "Something went wrong..."

Once "Something goes wrong" all us lost, and everything (Claudia/Cadence/Jack) is broken and a reboot is going to have to happen anyway.
