Everything is going reasonably well now. I just have some minor quibbles with what connects to what on startup, and with remembering configuration changes.
Ladish starts on login. I can then start Claudia. What is the
correct, clean way to
shut it all down? It feels uncomfortable to just shut the machine down

.
Should I unload the studio? Then quit Claudia?

Hi Falk, thanks for your always quick answers (I don't know when you can get time to develop!) but I want to know, this time, is not how to reload, but how to shut down cleanly, ensuring that all process exit hapipily

...When shutting down the machine!
Nothing obscure

I just want to make sure processes exit cleanly, saving whatever they need to save.

OK, thanks, so I can forget about that concern.
I have one problem now, which is that config details are not remembered, ie, I set Jack/Firewire-driver to 96,000 in Claudia, and it starts at 48,000. I do the same in Cadence to be sure and it still starts at 48,000. Same with fail/ignore self-connect setting: this is not remembered either.

I'll try that.
But, the Jack configurations in Ladish/Claudia are studio-specific, right? And should take priority over anything in the cadence version of the same thing?
Restarting Jack in Cadence sometimes gives me errors of the "Cannot start streaming threads" variety. My hunch is that this is something on the FFADO/Firewire side of things, which is why I have not mentioned it here. It can usually be fixed by disconnecting/reconecting the firewire device, pointing to hardware/drivers problem.
Restarting Jack once Claudia/Ladish is involved is less reliable. It does work sometimes, but regularly "Something went wrong..."
Once "Something goes wrong" all us lost, and everything (Claudia/Cadence/Jack) is broken and a reboot is going to have to happen anyway.

This is my big problem now: I cannot change the jack parameters in Claudia. They appear to have been saved. They have been saved: I can see in the .config/jack file, but when it is all restarted, it is back to ?default? values. At least it remembers which driver to use so it works.
Where is that stuff from the first settings screen saved? I need to change the self-connect settings. Can't find that anywhere.

The safest way to ensure the settings are properly saved is to stop the studio, configure jack, start studio and save it.
Bingo! It works
I really don't know, having tried "everything" how I missed that combination. I think I did get it, once, but had not realised the formula that had led to my isolated success.
(gladish GUI doesn't actually allow to configure jack while a studio is loaded).
But Claudia
appears to --- which has caused me quite a lot of wild goose chasing!

Maybe the first post in this thread should be updated. It still says :
Should I use 32bit or 64bit?
If your computer supports 64bit - use it!
The new Ubuntu 12.04 now properly supports muti-arch, which means that you can now even install a 32bit deb package in a 64bit system. Also, most libraries are now multi-arch ready, Flash runs in 64bit, Wine works too, there's no real reason not use it.
(KXStudio is missing lmms+vst and dssi-vst packages on 64bit right now, but they will be re-added at some time)
Thanks.

That is only the answer, if the question is, "How can I accelerate the deterioration of my hearing?"
Sorry for OT but this sentence disturbed me. I would have PM'd it, but people in general really need to know how not to **** up their ears.
Hope your hearing comes good mate

Cheers, and thanks for your concern.
I'm needing that EQ to even hear HF stuff, but you can be assured I keep volumes low. Thing is, I haven't listened to music at anything like damaging volumes except for rock concerts forty years ago. At that time I was also chucking around pieces of steel, working in factories. None of that was a good idea.
At 60, it would take a miracle to make it any
better now, but yes, I am certainly not going to do anything to make it worse.
I'd join in the message: youngsters, take care of your hearing. There are no dentures for the ears (ok, there are hearing aids, but they are not made for music lovers). Once damaged, it is damaged for ever. It is going to get less with age anyway, do not add to that or accelerate the process. My ENT man confirms that neither age-related hearing loss nor noise-induced damage are going to have any practical remedy, at least in my lifetime.
I would have PM'd it, but people in general really need to know how not to **** up their ears.
All advice gratefully received. But I really do keep those levels modest, even for rock music. Nothing like as loud as the PA systems at the concerts I regularly attend --- and those are
classical Indian music!
Thanks ...and apologies to others for the off-topic
