RASP: Music Toolkit (current version: 2.5)

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

RASP: Music Toolkit (current version: 2.5)

Post by bhilmers »

Hello! This is my first post on LM. I made the switch to Linux about a year ago, but I've just recently found this site. I'm glad I did. I hope to spend a lot of time here.

After getting familiar with audio on Linux, I found a need for some tools that were missing. These are basic things I used regularly on Win/Mac that I couldn't find anywhere in the world of Linux. I'm talking about tap tempo, a delay/Hz calculator, song time calculator, note to frequency conversion -- stuff like that. So, one day I wrote something in Python and named it RASP: Music Toolkit. I find it very handy when using LMMS in particular. I hope those who need such a thing will find it helpful. Note: I know these tools exist as web-apps, but I like the benefits of a local program. Plus, mine works better than some of the ones out there, haha.

Also, I wouldn't mind some advice. I dream of getting my little utility into a distro, but I'm seriously new to programming and stuff. I've never successfully made a working makefile and can't make heads-or-tails out of Canonical's instructions.

Thanks for reading and I hope to join the discussion soon -- after I get caught up with all the threads here. :)

I just added a .deb for v1.5. This version has the note-to-frequency converter, v1.0 does not.

UPDATE

My little calculator program is still growing. I've fixed some minor issues in 1.5 and written two new features for 2.0: a metronome and a simple frequency generator. It wasn't too difficult to add them since half the work was already there in the program. (Note: The metronome needs to be fixed because it uses 100% CPU, and that is something I'm going to work on right away.)

I also added this project to sourceforge in addition to launchpad. There are .deb files to download, but they are not official Debian packages and I have no PPA. All that stuff is beyond my comprehension at this point. I have a dream of seeing this little utility of mine in a Linux distro, but haven't any clue how to reach that goal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To get the attention of the Maintainers of several Linux Distro´s, best is to announce your project at LAD / LAA / LAU mailing lists, most distro maintainers witch doing the audio related stuff for there distros, be subscribers there to get fast information about the latest news in the Linux Audio world.
LAA (Linux Audio Announces)
http://lists.linuxaudio.org/listinfo/li ... o-announce
LAD (Linux Audio Developers)

LAU (Linux Audio Users)

Hi.

Nice work on RASP! For the record I've included it in AV Linux 6.0 to be released by mid August.

If possible could you add 'AudioEditing' as a category to your '.desktop' launcher file in your deb package? Keep up the great work!

Sweet! Thanks GMaq.

I added the category and released a version 2.1.

I was seriously bothered by my failure to notice the massive CPU usage, so I fixed that and tried to clean up a few things. The metronome is still a bit of a novelty and needs a total rewrite when I get a chance -- but everything else works great. I'm still learning how to program. This is like the first thing I've ever made and I'm 100% self taught. I'm surprised I've gotten this far. :)

Version 2.5 released. SF | LP.

This is where development takes a little break. All the intended features are there, though some don't work as I envisioned because I'm a novice programmer. I added a static visualization for the metronome and a white noise option for the frequency generator. There were some usability issues I took care of too.

I've got some other project to work on right now, but when I get motivated next I'll look into a new GUI and widget set. Hopefully by then I'll know enough to optimize this thing a little better.

Thanks.
