The big Freeze, how cold did it getat your place?

This terrible freeze is still going strong, are any of you caught up in it?
Alaska has been -49 below zero fahrenheit in cities, even -65 in outposts.
Hope the old and young are being watched carefully, hypothermia at
those temperatures is easy to underestimate. People should
not travel, or stay alone.

Been a disappointing winter here. All week the temp has been flirting with the high 70's until the first significant "cold" front of the year brought things down into the 50's.

There was a big freeze predicted but everyone was skeptical because apparently it didn't come. But few days ago temperatures dropped below -20C in some places and there is a slight chance we will have an Elfstedentocht again!

My car didn't start this morning
Had to buy new battery. We have -16 deg in the night (and mornig) here in the South of Germany. No weather for me. So I avoid going outside, whenever I can. That leaves me more time for recording.

I broke down and bought a battery charger, on sale luckily, after a failed start last week.
Now I keep a spare battery charged and ready, and will put it in the trunk
if I must travel during extreme cold. Polishing the poles and cable heads
with trips of 400 grit emery cloth can make a huge difference. Twelve days
of nonstop 25 mph winds, have kept things very cool.

Elfstedentocht sounds like fun, especially if some stray kegs are left unguarded
along the route. :)
