Starting Fresh

I recently installed cadence and some other things from the kdxstudio site. Today, my sound magically died. I think I done messed something up. HARD. I think it may be time to just bite the bullet and try an audio distro.
I looked at tango studio, but I wasn't in love with it. I'm downloading av linux right now. Is there some other distro I should look for? Also, is there some way to completely remove all the old ubuntu stuff once I switch over?
All I want is to be able to do some light recording and midi work, and be able to screw around on the internet (youtube, flash, etc). I have 4 gig of ram, so I'm guessing my machine should be able to handle that no problem.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Distro-hopping is fun but don't get obsessed with the quest of the best.
In the end, there is no such thing as "best distro". And there are so many variables and fast evolution in every aspect, from the kernel and drivers to the user interface...
Good luck with AVLInux. It is a great distro. I also tested Dream Studio some time ago and I liked it.
Cheers! Pablo

The KX apps are in heavy developement, and occasional probems should be expected.
The qjackctl wiki links have the info you need, so you can revert from experiments.
A mad-scientist labcoat should be given out to new linux-users,
and then medications of appropriate strength, as we reach various milestones.
jackd -d alsa -r 44100
the basic command works almost always, then start qjackctl

I ran that command, it printed some sort of error message, and my sound works again... I'm not sure how that works, but hey, whatever.
Now I just gotta get my pc to actually make a usb of av linux, and things should be good.

this page lists the jackd commandline options, most are not commonly used,
but it's good to get an idea of the possibilities lurking
http://linux.die.net/man/1/jackd
in the example below, saved by my qjackctl, right to left,
There are different Capture and Playback hardware devices, Chw: and Phw:
-D is for duplex (both input and output)
-n3 is the Periods/Buffer, (3 is for usb devices, some labcoat wearing guy can explain why

)
-r44100 is the samplerate,
-P89 is the priority given to jackd, (89 being the highest)
-t2000 is for midi timing, (2000 is probably a wacko setting, from some experiment
I've forgotten about

)
jackd -P89 -t2000 -dalsa -r44100 -p256 -n3 -D -Chw:1 -Phw:0,0
The -R option is absent, it did a 180 flip, in jackd2, you now specify realtime kernel mode by NOT listing -R
If using jackd1 you would add -R if you WERE using realtime.

So I installed ubuntu studio, and it bricked my damn computer. Gah. Can't boot anything at all. Grrrrrr. Going to try to install dream studio and see if that helps.

Make a separate /home partition, so many of your internet and personal
settings can be kept active, by choosing not to format that partition in
future installs. A usb hard-drive case runs about $25 and less, so you can do test
installs and boot them using your systems early boot F-key, or change the bios
boot-priority to boot the main hard-disk last.
A handy alternative is a Puppy Linux 'frugal install', where you run the live cd,
and are prompted when ending the session, if you want to store your settings in a file.
This file is accessed in future live-cd sessions, and would be unaffected by a brick.
(I'm a master brick-mason

so I know it's fun to always have a system, when
it happens. ) Macpup is less than 200 meg, and a well polished distro.
Do you play guitars, keys, drums, other instruments ?

Thanks for the advice. Dream Studio brought my machine back from the land of the brick. Is Macpup the same as Puppy Linux? Also, is there a way to remove old kernels I will never attempt to use again?
I play trombone, but I also noodle with guitars and keys. Most work I do with my machine is with recording acoustic instruments (but I'm looking forward to trying Seq24 (or whatever number it is))

Yes, just uninstall the non-used "linux-image" packages via synaptic and then run "sudo update-grub" in a terminal. To know the current kernel version run "uname -r".
If you are not sure and you need help, show the terminal output of:
dpkg -l |grep linux-image && uname -r

Trombone is a difficult instrument. I love a good trombone section in a bodacious ska band!
