Can someone tell me the difference please?

Post by dchurch24 »

Hi all,

I'm struggling to tell the difference between this:

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/A ... e2496.html

and this:

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta66.html

Obviously one must be better than the other, it's dearer for a start, but as I will only be recording on my own with one or two midi instruments and a few 'real' instruments, I don't know which to go for.

Obviously I'd prefer to go for the cheaper option, as I will need to buy a pre-amp as well.

I'm itching to get going, but I fear I have read too much about it and confused myself.

Fair enough - I think the 66 might be overkill for what I want to do.

I think I'll go for the cheaper option ;-)

The audiophile is a single input with MIDI connections. The Delta 66 (this is what I have) has two stereo ins and 2 stereo outs, or 4 and 4 monos, as well as S/PDIF connections on the card. Also, doesn't have a MIDI connection.

I strongly recommend eBay for the Deltas. You can pick up a Delta 66 or a Delta 44 (just like the 66 only without the S/PDIF connections) for around $60 without much problem at all. I saw a Delta 66 new in the box go for $68 just this morning.

Hi, thanks for that.

The only 66s I can find on ebay are nearer $200 sadly (living in the UK at the moment is very expensive in all aspects it seems).

However, if I were to get the 66, does that mean that I also need a USB midiport thing? I do have one somewhere, but I have mislaid it in my house move.

Update: I have just bought the 66 on ebay, so hopefully should turn up soon.

Still need MIDI though...I have a feeling I am going to be turning the house upside down looking for my USB-MIDI converter!

Congrats on your purchase of the Delta 66! I think you'll like it. I would recommend you start reading up a bit on the envy24control application. You'll use it to route signals and adjust settings on the Delta 66's internal mixer. You will need an external MIDI adapter though, the 66 is audio only, no built-in MIDI.

If you can't find your MIDI converter around the house, look for one of these: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html

That's what I'm using for my Korg keyboard and it works great with Linux. There are several on eBay right now for less than $30 or you can buy a brand-new one for $39.00 from zzSounds: http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOUNO

Good luck!

Thanks for that.

Ha - that's almost exactly the same model I have (had?)- mine was called a midisport I think though (not the same company now is it?)

I will have a serious look around the house tonight and if I can't find it I'll order one up - I am champing at the bit to get this up and running.

The last time I home-recorded it was with Tascam 4 and 8 track tape recorders!

PS. We're in the UK, so everything is twice as much money as everywhere else! Just found the Uno on ebay - circa $60!!!

Actually, yeah, I think it is. zzSounds lists it as a M-Audio MIDISport UNO. Probably exactly the same thing.

I understand, trust me! You've got a bit of a learning curve in front of you but you're going to have a blast with it. The bulk of my previous recording was done with a Tascam 4 track as well. I've been tinkering with my Roland VS-890 and various software tools like Cakewalk for years, off and on, but never doing anything serious. The tools that are available in Linux continue to impress me now that I'm using them semi-seriously.

Ouch! What happens if you just try to order it from zzSounds directly? Seems like with the weak dollar it might be cheaper to order one new.

Hmmm...that makes them about 25 quid. Mind you the pound is extremely weak at the moment too - £1 = €1 at the moment!

I might ask a friend of mine in Missouri if he would buy one over there and send it on to me.
