Hi all!
After migrating to Linux completely from Windows (no point beating around the bush, I was so fed up with the cosntant nagging, virii, spam, spyware etc.... that I had no choice but to move to an OS that suited me better, so went the whole hog and all 7 machines were reinstalled from scratch, more-or-less at the same time), the only thing I missed was messing about with Cubase.
...then I discovered Hydrogen, Rosegarden and Ardour, and now I am excited!
My spare room is about to become my home studio. I have a laptop that is AMD64 with 2gb of RAM - I'm hoping the soundcard is good enough to support this. If not, then sod it - I'll get a new dedicated machine built for the purpose.
So glad to have found this place!
Oooooh!

Superb!
On reflection, I think the laptop is going to be close to useless.
I've just been looking around for bits to build a new dedicated *studio* machine - the misses was watching TV, so just went, "yeah, whatever" - so I take that to mean, "go ahead, buy the best you can get"
The hardware spec I can deal with, but the soundcard I will need some help with I think - low latency etc...
I'll post up in the correct forum once I have done some research.
Ca't friggin' wait.
I once bought the ill-fated Tascam US-428 -

sadly, unless you had exactly the same hardware that they tested it on, there was little hope of getting it working - so I chipped it in and swapped it for a JCM900.

Re: Oooooh!
Welcome welcome!
On the soundcard front, when I set my home studio up a few weeks ago I picked up a used M-Audio Delta 66 off eBay with a Omni I/O interface for $109. Other than having some issues with the Omni (it looks like abused jacks) it's working really well. I plugged it into an already-existing Ubuntu Studio installation and it was picked right up. I can run JACK at sub 3ms latencies. Even with the problems I'm having I'd recommend it. In fact, if mine can't be salvaged I'll probably buy a new one to replace it with.

Hmmm....the M-Audio Delta 66 looks very interesting, and sounds just up my street.
I'm just in the process of looking at completely new hardware now - a bit bad timing due to Christmas coming up - financially talking - but hey, you only live once!
