Can't get midi to work with my Tascam us122

Post by GhostofJohnToad »

I have audio working well with my us122. can record, playback, etc. Then decided I would like to connect my MPC1000 and use the pads for some input.

Well the midi light on the us122 blinks when I hit a pad, but none of the applications in show any signs of life. I tried Renoise, Hydrogen, Rosegarden... Nothing.

Not sure where to start to test what might be going on. I tried both raw and seq in qjackctl and neither setting yields anything.

Hi,

The TASCAM shows alsa midi ports, so you should be able to connect to software alsa MIDI input ports. I don't use Renoise, it could use jack MIDI or alsa MIDI.

In Rosegarden, Studio -> Manage MIDI Devices. On the bottom right panel you should see the TASCAM MIDI port (20:0) as an available input. Select it. A MIDI track must be armed to record (orange button) in addition to the general record button.

In Hydrogen, Tools, Preferences, MIDI system, select ALSA MIDI controller and the TASCAM MIDI port as input.

Needless to say, channels and pitch range must be coherent on both sides.

You don't need to select a MIDI driver in qjackctl. At least Hydrogen and Rosegarden do alsa MIDI, not Jack MIDI. However, if you need that the TASCAM has jack MIDI ports you can use "a2jmidid -e" (some synths as Yoshimi and sequencers as Ardour3's MIDI sequencer do Jack MIDI... Renoise?) .

Cheers, Pablo
