Need suggestions on hardware...

Post by Excds »

Hi everyone. I'm at the moment in Hong Kong and I'm thinking that I can probably find some fun synth or a fun midi controller or something here to buy (hopefully cheaper). There's only two problems with that plan:
1: I don't know what I want and...
2: I have no idea of where to get it.

So, in general I'm looking for something that generates noise (not to big, I've got to get it on the plane back) and it would be a bonus if it has midi input. Or if there is some place I should check out where I might find things like that (not Tom Lee Music, I've already visited that).

Suggestions?

Hello Excds. Cool, Hong Kong! We loved it there! Before we went there about two years ago I checked if there were any music stores around. Apparently there are very little (actually only Tom Lee). We've been to a lot of malls (there simply are a lot of malls in Hong Kong he he) but no music stores anywhere :(
I hope you have a great time anyways! And enjoy the food, man do they have some great restaurants there.

I just got a tip to go to Golden Computer Center at Sham Shui Po. They might have something. Worst case: I'll only buy some lasers... :-)

And yes, the food.
Ever noticed something?

there are actually a few other places you could try in hong kong. depending on how long you're here, synths and interfaces occasionally show up on hongkong.asiaxpat.com/classifieds/musical-instruments/ or on the yahoo auctions (but this requires reading chinese).

barring that, you should also check out tsang fook and parson's music. generally, tom lee seems to have the "biggest brands" while parson's has the close to biggest. if golden doesn't work out, you may also have some luck in mong kok or wan chai computer centres/

prices on audio goods do seem a bit high compared to other locales, however.
