Hello all,
<Story>
I was born a musician.
I've been recording music using only GNU/Linux software since about suse7.3/hydrogen 0.something.ish. By the time I upgraded a time or 3, a clear choice had to be made between getting instruments and playing them or staying online, so I've only recently started publishing my work under the Creative Commons License.
...you see, I'm a bass player. We're a bit freaky about tone, but that's a longer story.
Anyway, this part is where linux made the difference.

I almost didn't believe I could achieve my dreams.
Ok, I'm gonna date myself a little here. In 1992 I proposed a composition/recording to my first music producer requiring up to 7 electric basses, crazy drum programming and no synthesizers. He said I was a madman and it could never be done without a huge budget studio. He cited the gold record on his wall and said if I wanted to pay some half a million dollars for an album that won't sell on the radio, to go ahead. A bit disheartened, I conceded that while Chris Squire and Spinal Tap got away with it, they did have huge budget studios to work with. I settled for a song with 2 bass parts and a smaller budget, moved on to other bands and cities and eventually gave up composing music for a job that had a steady paycheck going for it.
Slightly more than a decade later I found myself working on a linux install and noticed the multimedia packages. My producer was right about recording budgets a decade ago, but times change. I got the gist, got a box, got a bass, and got to work.
Essentially, this music might never have been expressed without Free/Open Source Software. The studio and/or software costs would have been too severe. I got my dream album recorded at about $498,872.73 under budget without worrying about how many copies it would sell. I love it and that's all that matters.
The latest package versions are amazing. I am now saving for good hardware, old hardware upgrades and working on some more radio worthy notions.

Thanks again to all the developers for the software that lets me do what I do, whether anyone else likes it or not.
