In praise of JACK
I think one of the most amazing— and largely underpromoted and underappreciated— aspects of Linux audio is JACK’s "freewheeling" mode.
Not the peice of software called freewheeling, which is also pretty amazing, but I’m speaking specifically of the ability of JACK to run in "freewheeling" mode, which allows JACK-aware Linux programs like Ardour to run faster than real-time. This allows, for example, the ability to dump to disk an hour-long session in 2 minutes. This is a huge time-saver for any electronic musician, producer, or studio engineer.
One of the most tedious time-wasters in programs like ProTools, is waiting in real-time for a session to dump to disk. With Ardour and JACK, this happens in merely a few minutes.
I think once more studio professionals discover this feature, and start using it, they won’t be able to live without it. And it’s a unique feature to JACK, which is Linux’s pro audio toolkit.
Can someone tell us more about this?
