What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Hi,

Welcome :)

check out our wiki: http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php ... a7c0691b14

and

http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php ... a7c0691b14

It depends:
I use Debian testing with a rt kernel of 64studio...
I started with Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio
I think it depends also on your experience with linux:
- no experience > go for Ubuntu Studio 8.04.1
- or choose your distro 64studio/ jacklab for example
- or make your own multimedia distro: http://sidux.com/index.php?module=pnWik ... udiostudio (don't have to be sidux...)

Check around your family/friends/collegues if any of them uses linux and if they might give you some help. Nothing beats a real person to help you. Most distros these days have a music oriented version your support team would be comfortable with.

Else check your hardware, visit the forums/sites of a few "music distros" and see if any had issue with your hardware. Choose one of the others.

Do you still use Debian testing with a 64Studio kernel? Did you install 64Studio first and upgraded to Debian testing, or did you installed Debian first and then added 64Studio's repos?

I'm thinking of doing something similar with Mepis 8, which is based on Debian lenny, but don't know what is the recommended way. I'm even thinking of compiling my own "first"rt kernel with Mepis, as I like that distro a lot, but they don't have a rt kernel for multimedia on the repos.

Any advice? Thanks.

Yes, I still use it.
Installed debian testing and added 64studio repo's. I've a debian mixed testing/unstable btw...:

You can try to make your own kernel, but there seems to be problems with some newer kernels >2.6.25 I guess

edit: Is MEPIS based on Debian testing? And does it only has kde or also gnome?

I've installed Ubuntu and then installed the "ubuntustudio-audio" metapackage which takes care of everything for me (especially the realtime kernel support). This has been especially useful on my iMac G5 which also runs Ubuntu/ppc (remember that Ubuntu/ppc is community supported, not officially supported by Canonical). As far as I can tell, there's no PowerPC version of Ubuntu Studio, so this is the best option for me on that architecture.

That metapackage (along with the other "ubuntustudio" metapackages) are available for other "officially supported" architectures as well.

I've been able to use amSynth and some other MIDI applications successfully.

Mepis 7 (the current official release) is based on Debian etch, while Mepis 8 (currently in Beta 5 stage but pretty stable; that's what I'm running right now) is based on lenny. Both come with kde 3.5 by default; I've seen some talk on the forums about a Gnome version (seems like a community remake rather than an official version), but never tried it.
