Edirol UA 101 Setup

Post by crazymunchiesdj »

Hello,

I have been trying to setup Edirol UA 101 interfaece with my laptop under linux but I don't have much success with it. I'm not able find a whole lot of useful information online.

I'm running gentoo linux with the standard gentoo sources. I tried the kernel from the pro audio overlay, but I seem to be getting better performance with the 2.6.36 kernel. Anyway, when I plug the device it is correctly recognized and the ua101 kernel module is loaded. aplay -l and arecord -l list the device.

Code: Select all

|-(~)--
|-(crazymunchies@n73j)-: aplay -l
---skip onboard device 0---
card 1: UA101 [UA-101], device 0: UA-101 [UA-101]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Code: Select all

|-(~)--
|-(crazymunchies@n73j)-: arecord -l
---skip onboard device 0---
card 1: UA101 [UA-101], device 0: UA-101 [UA-101]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to use all of the outputs and inputs. No matter what I do playback and capture works only for channels 1 and 2. When I run speaker test with 6, 8, 10 channels, all audio comes out either from output 1 or output 2.

I can start jackd with 10 channels for playback and 12 channels for capture. However, all output channels seem to be routed to outputs 1 and 2 on the device. Same thing happens for capture. Only capture channels 1 and 2 seem to be active. The monitor registers input only on these 2.

I hope that somebody must have this working and would know how to setup the device so that all channels can be used.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,

Have you tried switching on the High Speed USB mode and switching off Direct Monitor Soft Control?

(As it seems that there is no alsa mixer for this card at the moment).

According to the Edirol manual (and the link about the snd-ua101 driver, see below) you should have all the channels available in high speed mode.

You can always ask in the alsa users or linux audio users mailing lists. I just made a search and there is a recent thread on this card, where the driver developer himself (Clemens Ladisch) takes part:

Thanks Pablo,

I checked the high speed switch and it was on. I turned off Direct Monitor and gave it a shot. This time it worked fine. I don't remember doing any changes since the last time I tried so I can't tell what could have been different. I also tried playing around with the Direct Monitor switch and that didn't seem to make a difference, it worked anyway. If I see the issue again I'll try to figure out what might be different. At least I have a good working baseline now.

I am having the same problem It refuses to accept 4 channel input -- running directluy from Csound to alsa or portaudio.
I really need to know what you did!
