Hello from Chicago

Post by dayer4b »

Hey all,

I'm looking forward to setting up a Linux DAW but I'm not sure what distribution or hardware to use. I've been reading this forum off and on for months and I've experimented with puredyne and Ubuntu Studio. I definitely want to get into using Ardour, but I need some help.

Hopefully this isn't the wrong place to be asking about this. Does anybody have any good recommendations for hardware or distros? I'd prefer a laptop, but I can imagine a desktop working out...

I currently run XP with an old version of Vegas. :)

Hi Dayer4b,

from my point of view it is required to run the PC with a RT-Kernel (Real Time), thus it is either required to install the Kernel afterwards or choose a Linux-Version, which does already include it. Maybe the AVLinux is a good version to choose.

Regarding the question desktop or laptop PC: I am using a Macbook, and I think I would by a Laptop again when I need it, but only for the reason that I have limited space on my desk.

However I think a desktop PC is preferable, because the cooling of the CPU inside a laptop is not very good and you might want to set the CPU frequency to max for best performance, which is also required to get a stable system.

Best Regards
Ralf

Thanks, I am coming to terms about the desktop. I think it's the way to go. I'd love to continue using my current (Windows XP) desktop, actually. It is on this machine that I've installed puredyne, but I can't get drivers that work with my soundcard: ESI WaMiRack 192L. Any ideas about that?

I've done alot of searching and I haven't found anything. Perhaps if I upgrade my puredyne install or try AVLinux I can get newer ALSA drivers? I'm not sure if that makes sense.

My long-term goal is to get my system up and running on a desktop (preferably my current desktop) and then to also export to a laptop for portable mixing etc. For a DAW, I'm looking at Ardour.

Hi and welcome!

It seems that your soundcard is not supported by alsa as it is not mentioned in:

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. ... Vendor-ESI

Anyway, you can ask in the alsa users mailing list.

Are you sure AV-Linux (4.2) has an RT-kernel :?:
