Hi from Istanbul

Post by kokoshmusun »

Hi all,
I switched to Ubuntu from Vista a year ago and have since been a huge fan of Linux.
I'm now also trying to switch all/most of my audio creation to Linux.
I'm playing around with PureDyne as a possible audio distro, and shopping for a linux-compatible PCI card (probably will get the ESI Julia) for my desktop since my current audio interface (Phonic 302 USB) is not supported in Linux.
I also just started a band though I have been playing bass, I'm going to switch to synth/MIDI/laptop. So, I'm really interested in setting up a live rig based around Linux (though I may also go the hardware route, not sure).
I have a laptop (which has an onboard Realtek sound card) and I'm wondering whether I can actually use it for live performance without having to buy an audio interface. Or at least, whether I can get a combined MIDI controller/audio interface like Novation Xio Synth and control some linux software with it.
I'm generally interested in experimental sounds and triggering pre-recorded samples (e.g., speech, field recordings, loops) live and then applying effects on them (LFO, envelope filter, delay, etc.). I'm very interested in learning puredata and adding some algorithmic/generative aspects to our band's music.
I'm a little confused about exactly where to channel my resources for setting up this live rig, so any recommendations would be great.
Happy to be a linux user and part of this forum! Cheers!

Hello Kokoshmusun,

Greetings to Istanbul.

I think You have to buy an audio-interface, because the built-in soundcard will not make You happy.
Otherwise the sound is not clear and maybe there is also some noise. The target would be to record with 24 bits resolution, so the quality of the sound will not get impaired.

Best Regards
Ralf
