what do you mean? that's the good thing about .39...the possibility to run it and to change priorities on the fly.
I my case, I have a USB-sound-device....and now I am able to give it a higher priority than the other USB-devices.

no, that's cool, I like the rtirq but I thought the kernel would of been tuned like a Mac or QNX...

Hi,

Great info guys

We are also now testing 2.6.39-rc5 to make 2.6.39 the default for the next AV Linux 5.0. So far performance is very good, we have working proprietary nVidia drivers (ATi untested and not likely ready yet) and rtirq-init and rtc working flawlessly on the LiveDVD. Very exciting days for Linux Audio users! I guess when I started this thread about 2.6.36 being a true musicians Kernel I was a little too early...

Great to see lots of feedback on this Kernel keep it coming guys!

yeah you did started this thread didn't you!!! Greats are ahead for Linux Audio especially with folks like you doing the leg work...
We may not have support from manufacturers fully yet but like the saying goes, "build it and they will come!"

running rc7 now, works great for now, no problems so far, will stress it a bit to see if it work stable for me.
So for me that is the first vanilla kernel (non rt patched) for looonnnggg, looonnnngggg time I use.

there's one in the debian repos (linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae) which i tested a bit yesterday and no problem so far. Seems rock solid :)

I'm in envy here... this piece of crap snd-hda-intel will only work with the rt kernel.... Killer xruns with 2.6.39...
I was hoping it worked so no need for priority nvidia graphics driver but it didn't... Unless I compiled it wrong.....

Hi, I'm going to test this kernel too :-)
Just a question: with 2.6.39 there is no need to use PREEMPT_RT patch to get the same performances of a -RT kernel?

There is still work in the PREEMPT_RT patch that isn't in 2.6.39. The PREEMPT_RT patch afaik hasn't been updated to work on 2.6.39 though, and you might not need it. It's hard to say, best to just try it out...

I have tried it on my laptop and I still need the rt kernel. So I don't know...

Note that if you install a precompiled generic 2.6.39 kernel, you will be able to do irq threading (rtirq_init will work) but the configuration was not optimised for low latency.

So, if I understand correctly, the good news is that the optimised kernel binaries ("low-latency kernels") will also do irq threading without the need of an "rt patch" (as already mentioned, the last PREEMPT_RT patch is applicable to 2.6.33).
