Kernel 2.6.36 - A true musicians Kernel ?
Hi,
I have begun testing for the next AV Linux Kernel which is currently at 2.6.31.12-rt21 and have waited for 2.6.36 and it's many improvements to get here. I am testing both my own config and the latest liquorix Kernels and in early testing 2.6.36 is dynamite!! Although AV is already a light distro this Kernel is very snappy, boots quickly and I am getting consistently reliable lower latencies than my current -rt. Even out of the ordinary setups like using PCM_multi with 2 1010LTs are showing much improved latencies.
Has anyone else seen these type of improvements? I'd love to get a broader range of feedback and impressions from the greater Linux community and would be eager to hear input from Kernel gurus.
It seems perhaps-rt preemption is sliding further into obsolescence...

problem is that rtirq only works with the RT-KernelsGMaq wrote: It seems perhaps-rt preemption is sliding further into obsolescence...

Capoeira, if the new kernel is running that great, no need for the rtirq...
we both use Arch and the current kernel runs as smooth as the rt kernel and I am using the rtirq on it.

will test that out today, i'm working with a heavy WIN-VST right now, that's a good test for the kernelfunkmuscle wrote:Capoeira, if the new kernel is running that great, no need for the rtirq...

I actually skip any kernel branch for which there's no real-time patchset available as I need chrt (rtirq).
Unless 2.6.36 magically reassigns my IRQ's.

I'm hoping that's the case here...AutoStatic wrote:I actually skip any kernel branch for which there's no real-time patchset available as I need chrt (rtirq).

now take this: in my little test with a heavy winVST (RealGuitar2) the regualr Kernel 2.6.35 (ArchLiux64) works better then the 2.6.33-RT.Capoeira wrote:will test that out today, i'm working with a heavy WIN-VST right now, that's a good test for the kernelfunkmuscle wrote:Capoeira, if the new kernel is running that great, no need for the rtirq...

I can run that VST with the regular with a latency of 6.03 msec!!!!!! (Wine-RT+savihost+wineasio)

Re: Kernel 2.6.36 - A true musicians Kernel ?
Another cool thing coming down the pike is libraw1394 2.0.6...According to a user on the AV Linux forum who's been doing some testing it now supports daisy-chaining multiple firewire devices on the new stack which was previously only possible with the legacy firewire stack. I think Kernel hopping is a little out of control these days but it is nice to see so many positive improvements.
On a secondary firewire note latencies with firewire devices are also looking good with 2.6.36. Certainly rtirq has been useful in the past and seemed a necessity for low latency firewire operation but perhaps not necessary in that regard any more.
@funkmuscle
No need to wait liquorix Kernels have an Arch repo as well: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=39882

Keep the info coming and keep up the great work on AV... I've tried your distro and was quite impressed.

crazy mad xruns with 2.6.36-lqx kernel, with nothing running... the Arch 2.6.35 out performs it....

Re: Kernel 2.6.36 - A true musicians Kernel ?
Well by all means go with what works, on Debian I'm finding the opposite, the liquorix Kernel is at version 14, it looked like Arch was using an earlier version 9 last time I checked. However there are always an infinite number of variables to screw things up, if you are getting xruns at rest then something about your hardware ain't liking the lqx config that's for sure.funkmuscle wrote:crazy mad xruns with 2.6.36-lqx kernel, with nothing running... the Arch 2.6.35 out performs it....
