New Desktop Specification

Hi, I am in the fortunate position of having some funds (£500-1000) to invest in a new desktop system for music creation. What I want to know is what would people recommend for a good system i.e. AMD or Intel, no. of cores, optimal RAM, sound card spec etc. I know this asking a lot but a little guidance would be very helpful.

I'd say the sound card is the most important part, but that's me being a sound engineer. Get an RME if you can, have had the least hassle with them.
Lots of RAM is also good to have, at least 4GB.
