FST?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

FST?

Post by theprep »

Hi,
New to Linux. Building a new DAW, tire kicking on an old Presario in the mean time.
I've read about FST support for VST's, which I have a good deal invested.
Is it reliable, and how difficult is it to set up?
I'm trying to decide should I sell my plugs and invest in hardware.
I'm loving what I see, but wish plug ins/soft synths were of better quality, and more plentiful.
I can't seem to get the sounds I'm after with the likes of amSynth etc.
I use Fabfilters wonderful plugs at the moment. I produce drum & bass.

Hi,

Try Linux audio plugins first and learn how to use them. There are good FX plugins out there.

For synths, yoshimi | zynaddsubfx (looks ugly, sounds good!), phasex, ams and whysynth dssi are pretty good choices in general.

For drums, hydrogen (With any samples you like or buy)

Linuxsampler for (instrument) samples

Commercial:
Linux DSP
Disco DSP
Loomer
...

For Windows VST, try dssi-vst and fst from git
git clone "git://repo.or.cz/fst.git"

there are several ubuntu debs for fst and dssi-vst

for FST also have a look at festige, there is a thread from the programmer here.

but have a look at the linux-possibilities first.

but there are things you wont find, like a guitar-simulator like RealGuitar.vst or a good electric-bass simulator.

for things like synths, piano, synthetic-bass etc. you don't need VST
