No sounds - again.

Post by dchurch24 »

Hi all,

I seem to have this problem every time I start my machine up - I have an idea in my head, so I head upstairs to record it, and then spend around 3-4 hours getting sound output/input working, and by then I've forgotten what it was that was floating around my head.

Why can't Jack just remember what it was doing last, rather than reset on each reboot?

Anyway, last time after getting Jack set up again, I eventually realised that for some reason the output settings in the Envy24 Control Utility had changed from PCM Out to S/PDIF. I changed those and had sound again.

It's annoying, as it means that I am reluctant to turn the machine on, knowing the frustration I will have to endure before actually getting to record anything, hence I don't record anything for months at a time.

Now I turn the machine on, those settings have stayed the same but I have no sound again.

The soundcard is recognised, and the meters in Ardour are flying up and down when playing a previous recording (As they are in Hydrogen), but now the meters in the Envy24 thing are not moving at all, like the output isn't getting to the card.

I've tried every combination of hw:0 hw:1 etc... in Jackctl but no joy.

The connections all look right to me in Jackctl - and I've disconnected them all and just added the outputs from Ardour and so on, and still no sound. I've checked all my wiring, and it's good.

The card is recognised, although reported wrongly, but it's always been this way, if I specify it as a 66 it doesn't ever work:

Code: Select all

dave@ubuntustudio:~$ dmesg |grep ice1712
[ 19.218136] ice1712: Using board model M Audio Delta 1010LT

dave@ubuntustudio:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xedba8000 irq 22
 1 [M1010LT ]: ICE1712 - M Audio Delta 1010LT
                      M Audio Delta 1010LT at 0xbc00, irq 17

Oddly, Jackctl says it can't connect to the server if I don't first open Ardour then 'Reconnect' to Jack. If I do that, then press Start, jack starts fine.

This is what I get in the messages window if I don't first start Ardour and reconnect:

Code: Select all

10:55:31.887 JACK was stopped successfully.
10:55:31.887 Post-shutdown script...
10:55:31.887 killall jackd
jackd: no process found
10:55:32.310 Post-shutdown script terminated with exit status=256.
10:55:33.870 Could not connect to JACK server as client. - Overall operation failed. - Unable to connect to server. Please check the messages window for more info.
...with Ardour started and 'reconnected':

Code: Select all

10:56:22.836 Client activated.
Enhanced3DNow! detected
SSE2 detected
10:56:22.896 JACK connection change.
The status window in Jackctl says "Stopped", even though the 'Start' button is greyed out and it appears to be running.

If I click 'Stop' then Ardour and Hydrogen react to tell me that they lost the connection to Jack - so something is running...

If I open an Mp3 in Audacity I hear nothing, and again the meters are jumping up and down like something is playing, which it is ;-)

In Envy 24 all the outputs are set to PCM Out and the Analogue volumes are all up.

Very strange.
But nothing is unsolvable :)
You may try starting it this way and read the outputs:
  1. open a terminal window
  2. start jackctl from terminal window and start the jack server
  3. start ardour from another terminal
  4. try playing, recording tracks in ardour
  5. copy the outputs of both terminals for us to read and let's have a look on them
Looking forward to look back what happens now
