Hello from Spain

Post by danny-g »

Hi,

I was recently pointed to this forum by the excellent AutoStatic. Without guidance from him and many other very helpful posters over on the UbuntuStudio sub-forum, I would never have taken the plunge into Linux music. I'm really grateful to the whole FLOSS community for creating such an amazing platform for musical creativity - accent on creativity as, once all the system tuning is over, I'm constantly surprised at how this OS just 'get's out of your face' and allows one to concentrate on making noises.

Me? Just a mediocre old noodler in love with analog synthesis, solar power and olive trees. Most of my own 'music' is kept outboard until everything's finalised except samples and drums. But that's where it gets interesting (for me at least) as it has become a pleasure instead of a battle to digitise my stuff. YAY! Freedom!

I'll post a link to the stuff I've produced so far using JACK, Qtractor, Hydrogen then Audacity (would love to use JAMIN but need something more powerful than this T43 Thinkpad!) in the right section and you can judge for yourselves whether it's a useful plug for Linux music or not ;-)

And lastly, thanks to the admin team here for producing such a tidy website - but then I guess you're all programmers, anyway...

Welcome danny-g! Bienvenido! Yes, Jeremy is very helpful and nice. He knows lots of tricks for ubuntu and Linux.

Your songs are nice. I don't understand the speakers if I can't read the text but I guess I agree with the idea.

I am from San Sebastian. Your town and mine are said to be the most beautiful ones in Spain and I wholeheartedly agree!

An undetermined percentage of people here thinks that Donosti is not Spain, others think the contrary and others we really don't care as long as anyone can talk to each other freely and without calling names or making bad things.

I like oaks and I like olives and olive oil. However I don't like acorns but I love raw potatoes when they are fresh enough. I like solar power too, but just from a lurker's point of view.

Most of us are just users but there are linux sys admins and distro maintainers and developers as well in linuxmusicians. Flowers for them :D 8) :D

Cheers! Pablo

Hello danny-g, and welcome!
Our olive tree that we took home from Cádiz doesn't grow very well here, I know close to nothing about analog synthesis but we do have three solar power panels on our roof. And I do love noodling and Andalusia.
I'll check out your music as soon as we're back from holidays (France this time, otherwise we would've stayed in Conil de la Frontera).

Best,

Jeremy

Hi guys ;-)

I can see why you might call the Linux musician fraternity 'small' but I also wonder just how many more are out there feeling the freedom so much they don't have time to go online...(except to get their systems working ;-)

@pablo

I've never been to San Sebastian but I have friends from there who agree with you totally.
I don't understand the speakers if I can't read the text but I guess I agree with the idea.
Great but is it that you cannot hear the samples clearly enough or is it a translation issue or that you don't have the context? The last can be 'overcome' by going to a site like anti-ignorance.org that has links to every worthwhile (sorry, mainly english-speaking) 'alternative yet credible' news site on the planet, IMO.

I would love to use Catalan/Basque/Castillian samples also pero io no entiendo bastante Espanol, let alone Basque (all those X's ;-), when it comes to political nuances! And I'm with you 100% about enjoying life instead of getting tangled up in ancient feuds, despite the present dire trend in my music!

@AutoStatic I wish you and your family a great, relaxing holiday - no doubt it'll also be a good break from endless 'I can't get JACK working' type threads! I admire your tenacity as well as your cool ;)

No, there's a clear line north of which La Oliva just doesn't seem to flourish - I feel the same ;-)

----

BTW, I am open to any form of criticism - contrary to the content, I don't take the 'creation' side of it at all seriously these days - also I'm only uploading mp3's just now until I decide whether to stick with soundcloud.com but if anyone wants .FLAC's just let me know as I don't really have much faith in the .mp3 format. A-B comparisons of clarity and depth - no contest, imo.

I am not used to listening to English. I understand what I read but I can barely follow a speech. I should improve that.

Anti-ignorance, I like it. As the song says, ignorance is the root of fear and fear is the kindling of anger.

Spot on Pablo :D

Hey, I take your point and will ensure all spoken and sung words have a lyrics transcript from now on. It's just an accident of history that we're not all talking Spanish/Portuguese/Latin/Mandarin - not sure about Donasti, though - it's almost as 'obscure' as my parents Gaelic, sadly... ;-)

:)

Donosti (Donostia, strictly) is my town. So, it is the basque word for San Sebastian. Basque is the language, which in basque is called "euskera" and yes, it has lots of X's and K's.

Greetings and enjoy the sun!!
