Strands - Intimate Cinematic Cello

Post by jmhardin »

This may have been shared before, but some folks may not have seen it yet. While getting up to date with some channels I follow on YouTube, I came across this short from a sound designer. He created a virtual cello plugin for the Decent Sampler, and I figure some folks may want to check it out.

The short: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/l924d5m39zA
The plugin: https://venustheory.gumroad.com/l/strands

Gave it a try – but not with decent sampler. Binary-only Closed Source stuff makes problems on my oldish system.

I renamed "VT - Strands.dslibrary" to "VT - Strands.zip", unpacked it and got the samples from the "Samples" folder. I wanted to make a sfz out of them.

Must admit that the samples didn't convince me. I prefer CelloSect by Jeff Glatt. Cannot remember where I got it from. The license file says:

Thanks. I haven't checked it out myself yet as I'm just setting up my new laptop for recording, but I wanted to put up the links for folks who might want to know about it. I'll check out CelloSect when I have things set up for it.

CelloSect is from the No Budget Orchestra, available here as nbo_2.zip:

When you listen samples only you may miss the point badly. It is possible that 'instrument' uses them differently than you when you listen samples directly.

If the samples don't produce rich, long decaying sounds, you won't be able to make anything out of them that I like.

That is true, I can't. But some people do miracles with minimalistic samples.
