Libre Music Challenge #32: Drum and bass

Post by nyxeles »

Welcome to the Libre Music Challenge #32, for the month of July 2024.

This is a friendly contest where we make music with free (libre) software exclusively. Everyone is welcome to join, at any skill level.
This is a place for learning and sharing knowledge, and an opportunity to explore creativity through limitation.
But most importantly, we just hope it inspires you to make some music!

The challenge for this month is to make a track in the genre of Drum and bass.
You can use any DAW, any sound source and samples and any other plugin, as long as everything is free software. Samples must be available at no cost and under free licenses (i.e. public domain, CC0, CC-BY with appropriate attribution). Remember to list all software and each sample used.

Happy music making!

Seeing as this doesn't insist on a specific synth, I might have a go at this - Mind you, I've never got anywhere near D&B before

I found out that it's a lie. Drum and bass music isn't drums and bass only.

Yes, I discovered that myself!

Anyway, I still don't know where to submit my track. It's complete and ready to go.

Yes I read them. Upload is not the problem. It doesn't say where to post the link :?

Here is my entry. I think it's 'nearly' D&B

http://www.musically.me.uk/Misc/foldero ... ruiser.ogg

Some info:
Uses:
Rosegarden sequencer
Yoshimi softSynth
Tenacity (foss fork of Audacity)
All instrument patches are in the V2.3.2 default banks (except Soft Kick which is included in the current master's banks)

Patches in order of appearance:
Ice Field
Soft Kick
Natural Drum Kit
Vibraphone
Warm Synth
Steel Bass
Stick Hit
Ride
Ethereal
Drum Kit2
Hard Synth
Ride Crash

All chromatic parts were initially played in from a keyboard on CH1 to part 1, then moved to other parts.

I started out with just minimal Soft Kick for timing and improvised the Ice Field melody. Later splitting this out across Warm Synth and Ethereal and adding chords.

Vibraphone and Hard Synth parts were the next additions.

I then expanded the percussion and added Steel Bass.

After that it was just adjustments and editing for the best overall balance.

Actual recording was a single pass of all tracks from Yoshimi to Tenacity, and a very light Fast Lookahead Limiter applied to tame percussion peaks.

It was so fun to participate in Libre Music Challenge #32: Drum and bass. However, life got in the way and my track isn't nearly as polished as I would like. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gi5uR9 ... mPRu0/view

This was my first ever attempt at making music with free/libre software and it was nice to escape Windoze for a while.

Thanks for listening!
