Hi All,
Glad to be here. My name is Dave and i'm based on the east coast of Australia. I'm a trained sound engineer and have just ditched Windows and started on Linux simply because of the wealth of awesome free software out there and the flexibility of usage of it. I've found the learning curve quite steep with Linux, but I'm enjoying the challenge.
Can anyone tell me what is the best linux Multimedia distro to work with? I haven't been happy with Ubuntu studio as it doesn't support wireless networking very well and I've had heaps of probs with Jack server on Ubuntu desktop 9.10. Is there a better alternative that isn't Ubuntu?
Cheers

Hi Dave,
Welcome to linuxmusicians!
The wireless problem...
Have you tried installing wicd?
Jack server is a bit tricky to setup but not a big deal, feel free to ask!
Anyway, there is a recent thread here, "best distro for pro studio"?
Maybe AVLinux 4.0 can suit you better. Take a look at it.
Linux is about freedom of choice. Recommending is not easy!
Cheers! Pablo

Hi Dave - I'm also on the east coast (Melb). What distro did you end up going for? I recommend Musix 2.0 - Static distro that is set up to go and as far as I have seen v.stable. I only use it for a home studio but have given the v1.0 a pretty decent workout and had no issues. 2.0 is even better. Ubuntu Studio was not stable enough for me either. I looked at a few others but Musix draw me back every time I try something else. What I really like about it is that it is all there - heaps of apps you might need but everything you definitely will need and because it is a locked down distro it all just runs out of the box - no upkeep - just a secure and stable work bench. Less time fixing application problems and more time making music.
