UniVibe

Post by funkmuscle »

Hey guys, does Linux have a UniVibe type plugin?
I know we have a few rotary speaker effects but none gives that 60s-70s Hendrix, Trower, etc., kinda sound.

I know this is an old post, but I am browsing the forum today.

The Vibe was added to Rakarrack for 0.6.2 release.

For the technically inclined, I calculated the continuous-time frequency response for each phase stage, then used the bi-linear transform to map it to a system of digital filters. If you can spare the CPU to run it at 4x sample rate, it's pretty good.

It's not too bad at 44.1kHz samplerate, but when I graphed it, the frequency response is noticeably warped on the higher end of its sweep, but even 2x oversampling (say, 90+kHz) makes this effect pretty much irrelevant.

I mention it because it may be a useful tip to somebody wanting to make a Vibe plugin to look at the Rakarrack sources. The only thing I'm not yet very well satisfied yet is the LFO modulation response... so maybe somebody would want to improve it.

Also, it's CPU hungry...was really bad when I was computing filter coefficients for every sample (sounded really good then), so I decreased how often coefficients update (more grainy, but acceptable to my ears). A more efficient way to adjust these coeffs in real-time would be wonderful :) It's a somewhat complex filter, and I had a choice to either approximate using simple HP and LP filters, or really derive the transfer function...well I did the mathematics and I think it is worth it for the sound..now how to compute it efficiently. :?:

Enjoy!

Thanks for making this, its a very popular effect. Fourth in the chain during Machine Gun.
And a staple in the Hendrix repertoire.
I was trying to learn some echotron/phaser combo earlier.
I'll have to find a 6.2 deb somewhere, maybe I'll get lucky with Sid. :)
