How to make ADAT work ?

Post by polk9 »

Hi,
I have a Behringer 1820, and bought an Audient ASP800 to expand inputs.
I also have an optical/TOSLINK cable.
This cable comes from Audient's ADAT OUT to 1820 IN.

I also have an alternative configuration with an SSL 12.
Audient ADAT OUT ---> SSL 12 IN

I can't manage to have sound in Bitwig/Reaper and even from 1820 or SSL12.
Audient ASP800 seems to work well, i have a signal and even peaks when i put a mic or instruments, but no sound from PC and USB interface...

I'm stucked since yesterday, someone could help me ?

If you can't make your audio interface work on your computer then you can't get the additional ADAT interface's signal, either.

If your 1820 works then make sure the I/O selector on its back side is set to ADAT.

One of the interfaces has to be the clock master, the other one the clock slave.

Sorry if I can't get understood, english is not my native language.
Both USB interfaces, 1820 and SSL12 are working great, even if Audient is plugged or not.
Problem is I can't have any sound from the Audient on the PC...

Then see my other hints to the ADAT switch on your Behringer and to the clock settings. It seems the Audient cannot be a slave without a separate sync cable, so try to set it to master and you Behringer to slave.

Actually testing on SSL12

Audient is master, it defines sample rates, SSL is slave. I also have a little white sound when i change the sample rate.
Exactly the same thing for Behringer.

But still no sound from Audient on computer.

Thanks for taking your time for answering.

Maybe you have to route the ADAT inputs on your audio interface to the computer's input channels. On my MOTU UltraLite AVB it looks like this:

I notified that the white sound was coming from all Audient tracks in Bitwig. This let me think that it's well routed.

I moved the optical cable a little bit, and stil have white noise.

Could be a cable issue?

When the ADAT connection causes noise on existing input channels then it looks like a clock issue. Check if there is the same samplerate set everywhere.

Everything setup on 48khz.

  • Audient OK
  • JACK/Pulseaudio OK
  • Bitwig & Reaper shows 48khz too.

A bit of background ...

ADAT has an embedded clock. The audio data is coded in a way that allows the clock to be recovered.

Lets take connecting the Audient to the Behringer ...

The Audient has ADAT out only. This means it must be the master. To use the Audient as a slave, it has a wordclock input. The Behringer 1820 doesn't have a wordclock out so the Audient must be the master. You now have to tell the Behringer that it's the slave and to take the clock from the ADAT input.

You do that with alsamixer. Open a terminal and type alsamixer. There is an option to change the clock source.
