AV Linux Evolution-Mailprogramm

Post by Torsten2 »

Hey there,

the install of the new 23.1. (AVL_MXE-23.1-20240120_x64.iso) went lovely. Everything works but unfortunatelly Evolution runs into problems. Before it starts a programm asks me for a pass key (which I enter) and than evolution ends with:

Code: Select all

** (evolution:7290): WARNING **: 10:02:40.082: Failed to canonicalize path /root/.local/share/evolution/preview-plugins: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

** (evolution:7290): CRITICAL **: 10:02:40.082: Attempted to add disallowed path to sandbox: /root/.local/share/evolution/preview-plugins

(evolution:7290): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: 10:02:49.602: Your application did not unregister from D-Bus before destruction. Consider using g_application_run().
Torsten@mx:~
$ evolution

(evolution:7486): dbind-WARNING **: 10:02:52.970: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus: Failed to connect to socket /run/user/112/at-spi/bus_0: Keine Berechtigung

** (evolution:7486): ERROR **: 10:02:53.463: Failed to fully launch dbus-proxy: Der Kindprozess wurde mit Status 1 beendet

Than I started evolution with sudo. This worked. But gave me a guru meditation (which fells very welcome but a bit strange as well). The related .e-crashdump.txt gave me this:

Code: Select all

The program is not being run.

What does the actually lovely guru meditation mean and how can I start evolution other than as sudo?

Code: Select all

** (evolution:7290): WARNING **: 10:02:40.082: Failed to canonicalize path /root/.local/share/evolution/preview-plugins

That's kind of a red flag. Did you install evolution when logged in as root? Or run it as root so user configs were written into /root/? Anyway, that's not how it should be done.

Hi,

Evolution is extremely Gnome-heavy and to be honest I don't really test any email clients with AV Linux but it shouldn't require a password or be run as sudo. I have installed it here on my dev machine and it launched right away with its setup dialog, it didn't ask for any password.

The 'guru meditation' is basically Enlightenment (the Desktop Environment) telling you that it crashed and it will usually recover and as you have seen leave a log file, to be honest other than the root messages noted above I can't really make much sense of what went wrong..

How did you install Evolution?

How did you install Evolution?

I installed evolution via the mx-package installation. There it shows up under "popular packages" (beliebte Pakete). I think it asks for the password for a keyring once you connected e-mail accounts with it.

In the meantime I started AV 23.1. with system-d (I can select this in the boot options menu). Evolution in this 'environment' also asks me for keyring password but - after I have typed it - functions normally.

So I guess Evolution insists on opening the keyring and on your failing installation the keyring cannot be accessed because of a broken ownership of the keyring directory and/or datafile.

I've used web-based email (gmail, squirrelmail etc.)for many years so it's been years since I've used something like Thunderbird and I've never used Gnome so I'm not very familiar with Evolution..

More and more applications and Desktop Environments are developed with only systemd in mind so my feeling is if that works use it! MX Linux does offer both init systems by default but I personally have no preference or opinion one way or the other, for best compatibility you (and others reading) are probably better off to use systemd in an installed system..

*Note that AV Linux running live needs to use sysvinit because the MX Live booting system is developed to use sysvinit exclusively but once installed probably systemd should be recommended in general. I'm still collecting User input from this latest release to know what suggestions to make.

Thanks a lot for your effort. I'm not sure I'm getting warm with the latest release. There are many many cool features I like and I wanna try out but ATM I there seem to be quite some things that don't work and make me think it's not as well rounded as it's predecessor. But it also could be I need more time to get used to it. ATM my problem is I can't start the diskmanager with the latest version. It says:

Code: Select all

HI,

There are certainly some new kinks to work out but I think you are having some out of the ordinary issues there and I'm not sure if it is a locale problem of some sort or something else.

Here on the default English install both Evolution and Disk-Manager are working as expected so you are seeing some issues that I am not but let's get to the bottom of it... Have you installed a new locale since installing AV Linux? If you have done so how did you install it? After the initial install or during the install?

My apologies for the growing pains, I have only tested in English and until AV Linux got out into the wild I'm still learning what issues are lurking for those using other locales and languages..

*EDIT your crash says it's missing a gnome Icon in order to launch, have you removed 'Adwaita' or any other Icon theme from the default install?

Hey Glen,

thanks for getting back on this. I just re-updated back to 21.3. I'm glad I still found the iso on bandshed. Maybe I'm too old or ignorant, but I missed too much. E.g. window tiling or pressing the super-key to open the menu. And I was a bit overwhelmed by enlightened or maybe some other related news, e.g. the two filemanagers or the way you can adjust changes on the system. Maybe I'll try the AV 23 later on in my life.
Thanks for AV-Linux, it's my favourite OS.
Cheers and best wishes, Torsten
