MOTU 828 (2024)

Post by wrl »

tldr it works and works well

Been using this for a few weeks plugged into a Ryzen 5950X (x570 chipset) system. Ran it briefly plugged into an Intel 11th gen laptop as well. Kernel 6.7.2, working well with both JACK and Pipewire (Pro Audio profile).

Shame about the lack of AVB but it's more than enough i/o for what I'm doing.

Haven't tried any of the mixer functionality yet. Routing and whatnot seems to only be possible via the mac/win app, and mine has only been plugged into Linux systems so far.

It could be, not sure yet. There's no ethernet port like with the AVB models, so if there is a web interface, it's got to be tunneled over USB somehow.

Ah yes I get it, no AVB then no ethernet port

Jared from MOTU here in a totally unofficial capacity - I was really happy to see the level of excitement about the new 828 in Linux circles! To try to help you guys out, I put together this unofficial build of CueMix 5 for Linux in my spare time that should allow you to control your 828 while it's plugged into a Linux computer. To use it, just go into the build folder and run com.motu.CueMix5.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WFhmTM ... sp=sharing MD5 Sum: 9479774d594ca9f5e80c876fd62eacb3

This should work for local control of both UltraLite-mk5 and 828 devices - For UltraLite-mk5, it should show up on the discovery page; for the 828, you'll need to click the gear icon and choose "Enable WebMIDI".

Would love to hear how it goes if it's helpful for anyone!

Wow that's an incredible moment for us!! Thanks a lot!! I own a motu avb system (i've already written at gearspace forum and i think you've said something like new avb stuff are coming, so i'll wait for that) made of 4 interfaces but i need a little one working on linux...the ultralite avb ess doesn't work at this moment. I'm so excited by your attention to our choice of informatic freedom! Thank you again!

@mixingmanatee that's so nice of you ! I tried CueMix 5 on my Linux Mint 21.3 and it worked ok. I don't have an mk5 nor an 828 to try it for real, but if you guys can commit to make a linux-compatible CueMix build, that might draw in linux users to MOTU.

So also the UltraLite-mk5, very interesting. Does CueMix 5 on Linux also allow you to use the internal DSP?

I certainly can't make any promises on that front myself, but what I can say is that I will try (personally) to keep unofficial builds floating here that keep parity with the official CueMix 5 releases, as much as I can. And if there's enough continued interest, I'll certainly try to float the idea internally!

Yes, CueMix 5 on Linux should allow you the same control that you'd get on any other platform, which includes control over the built-in DSP (EQ's, reverb, etc). This unofficial package is built off the same app itself, just repackaged in a Linux-friendly executable.

CueMix 5 is only for the UltraLite-mk5 and the new 828. The 828es has a built-in webapp which is already accessible on Linux via the ethernet connection - the device just needs to be on the same network as the host, at which point you can visit the web UI through any browser by using the IP address of the 828es.

Yes that's the way I use it. By the way any news from AudioNarwhal ?

I've written to Dylan via Motu tech support some months ago, he was full of work, now i know why! He told me he was writing an alsa driver for avb interfaces but i don't know if he've done it and if it works. By the way, please @mixingmanatee , can you say hallo to Dylan from us? We've really appreciated his efforts to help us!

Hey, I'm glad to hear that the new 828 seems to be working well on linux!

Thanks @mixingmanatee for your help getting CM5 ported!

Yeah, bits and pieces of that driver are sort of working, but sadly I haven't been able to focus on it. Hopefully I'll have some time one of these days, but things are still pretty busy.

Glad to hear it's running on your distro! Just to clarify, this is only for the new 828 and the UltraLite-mk5 . It will not work with the 828mk3, the 828es, or any other devices.
