Need some advice for a new semi-weighted master keyboard

Post by liborius »

Greetings, I need some advice for a new semi-weighted 88 key master keyboard that won't cost a fortune and/or feel like a toy. Last year I've tried a couple M-Audio and didn't like their feel at all. Another keyboard I've tried 2 years back was too "springy", that is, it put a lot of pressure on the finger just like the key had no mass itself but relied only to a quite hard spring to counteract the finger pressure. I'm a bit lost today, as having moved far away from big cities I can't easily try keyboards for myself, my current one is defective probably beyond affordable repair, and therefore I would be forced to purchase one online without any chance of testing it before purchase.
So far I'm considering two models: Midiplus X-8 III and Nektar Impact LX88 Plus. They're quite different as the Midiplus has much less controls, but that's not an issue as I'm looking for the best touch, and would sacrifice all other features. What would other users here suggest?
As a reference, my current MK is a Studiologic VMK88Plus (not to be confused with the more popular and weighted VMK188) which is terrible both hardware and firmware wise, but the keyboard itself has a really consistent and solid touch for being a cheap semi-weighted one.
Thanks!

If you can try them in person, there should be large numbers of Yamaha keyboards. I like mine, after using the weighted Alesis QS8,
the yamaha is very light, but very 'even', and the transition is pleasant. Models come with many prefixes, DGX, KX, YPG, PSR, P, and myriad 'extras', but often with drum patterns, tempo control, and usually two layers and keyboard splits, that are nice to have. These are $350, and $430 and $420 asking price, pretty typical:
