jack_mixer

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

jack_mixer

Installed jack_mixer (http://home.gna.org/jackmixer/), all fine but when I change volume with a midi controller knob, I get clicks. If I change volume by moving the slider with a mouse - it is alright.

I've used it... still have it installed but 'non-mixer' does all that I think and also you can add LADSPA to the strips...

btw, I did try out jm2cv, but this sucks. I mean, in order to have it work I need to input the id of my knobs into a file - right. I can see that during a live performance already.

I am usually very understanding and can see the problems behind what developers do, but non-daw/non-mixer guys, while have my respect for delivering HQ stuff with great GUIs have my confusion as to why they should mention in only one line about jm2cv in their Manual and how they expect non-tech guys like me to understand how it works. I had to go search in the Internet and eventually found someone giving advice to look into example.cfg in the git folder.

I really hope that gets automated and it will have a way to recognize your midi controller messages. After all, in order to create a mixer, I have to create a project. Why not create a .cfg file there and write values automatically? Why not include jm2cv into the mixer? Why would I want a mixer that I can only control with a mouse on the screen?
And finally - why, in order to get a simple thing done I have to go through all that rocket science?
Before midi control is done in such a way that I just plugin my controller into it in Patchage and connect my knobs to sliders - I am not a user of Non Mixer and I do not know who needs a mixer which can be controlled by midi only if you fill out a text file.

Sorry for the rant. I am just a little frustrated by the fact that someone made so much work on the non-mixer and then made it all unusable by not providing proper midi binding to sliders.

The clicks are most probably due to the limited resolution of midi. 7 bit are simply not enough for a smooth fade, so most programs (and hardware mixers) interpolate the movement. One could also use msb/lsb controller pairs, giving 14 bit resolution, but then you need a controller that supports that.

You are right... the non-sequencer was a pain at first.... The non-mixer I'm still getting use to it... I like it but I see what you mean about little info in the manual...

I just tried (with alsaplayer, jack_mixer and vkeybd), and I can confirm the jack_mixer 'crackles' when the volume is changed - this is beyond the 127 'steps'

Interestingly, it all channels crackle when I adjust the volume of just one channel - even the ones that shouldn't be affected by the volume change. No xruns though.

Definitely seems like a bug to me, submitted https://gna.org/bugs/index.php?15947

Hallo,

I have another problem with Jack mixer, I can't start it.
Here is the terminal output:

Attempting to auto-start LASH server
lash_dbus_service_connect_handler: Failed to connect to LASH server: The name org.nongnu.LASH was not provided by any .service files
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/jack_mixer", line 655, in <module>
main()
File "/usr/bin/jack_mixer", line 611, in main
print "Successfully connected to LASH server at " + lash.lash_get_server_name(lash_client)
TypeError: cannot concatenate 'str' and 'NoneType' objects

Does anyone know what's wrong?

Greetings

Thomas

This should now be fixed in http://repo.or.cz/w/jack_mixer.git/comm ... 50d01b9aae - still a bit of crackle left, but this is also present from the GUI, so that must be another issue.

I can't reproduce it here, added https://gna.org/support/index.php?2537 . Could you show the output of 'sudo netstat -pan | grep 14541' ?
