Interfacing AVB in Linux

Hi all,

I was wondering how RME AVB Tool https://rme-audio.de/avb-tool.html or https://rme-audio.de/12mic.html, or MOTU UltraLite AVB https://motu.com/products/avb/ultralite-avb do interface with Linux.

Having no experience with AVB myself and no AVB-capable hardware at hand, I hope I'd find anyone out there with some experience.
Asked here https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=37588 but sadly no response yet.

If I understand the idea behind is controlling the device and updating its firmware via Browser.

MOTU UltraLite AVB has an Ethernet port that's not only used for AVB but also for controlling the interface with a web browser.

Thanks for the reply but its not quite clear to me what you'd like to say.
Does controlling the interface work? In viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18046&p=122814#p122814 you mention it does, if I don't get it wrong, but later on in that thread the USB connectivity is being mentioned.

Audio and MIDI go via USB to the MOTU UltraLite AVB.
The internal Mixer, its builtin effects and other stuff is configured with a web browser via Ethernet.

If you have an AVB driver you can probably use Ethernet for audio and MIDI. I never tested that.

It's something that interests me, but I don't have any direct experience. To me the status of AVB on Linux is in the "unknown" category.

@Drumfix wrote an AVB driver : https://github.com/Drumfix/avb4linux

If you could test it out I'd be interested in your results. I haven't seen anyone post here about using that driver. You need a special, AVB capable network card, currently network cards using the Intel i210 chipset.

The repo's readme states "Currently this implementation will create an alsa PCM device and connect a single 8in/8out AVB stream to an AVB endpoint." - so far so good, but does it mean 2in/12out for a RME 12Mic isn't possible? (apart from MADI-to-AVB capabilities)

No, if it's eight ins and eight outs, then it's not going to do twelve outs. I think Drumfix has written this as a test of concept, and if there's interest he'll expand it. As far as I remember there is already a request for more inputs and outputs.
