Autumn/Oblivion: a merger

Post by Impostor »

Better one mini EP than two micro EPs, is my thought.

I merged the tracks from Oblivion and Autumn Shades into a single 6 track EP. Not only for the duration (from 7 and 9 minutes to 14 minutes!), but also because I think they sound better together than apart.

Listening now, it seems i have to put a bit more effort into their integration. The oblivion tracks need a bit of spectral brightening to fit in better. Let's see if I can do that without ruining them...Coconut and Inhabitant are OK now. Intro to Oblivion is a bit more problematic. I'd hate to cut it though.

After listening to The Inhabitant, I just went through the whole EP. I think it does work as a single piece of work! I personally can't hear the integration issues you mentioned, but we always are the heaviest critics of our own work

Thanks for listening! The main remaining issue is the loudness. Spectrally I don't hear too much difference anymore. I had to significantly lower the volumes of all tracks to match that of A Short Intro, even after processing (both manually and with a limiter) the latter to the point of audible distortion. It's the ring-modulated bass drum which causes all the trouble here.

Okay, I had a bit of an epiphany here.

If the bassdrum causes the trouble, why not cut the bassdrum? And indeed. The track is now amenable to amplifying to a more sane level. Could increase the volume of the EP with 3dB.

And I like the track better this way too, and it also fits in better with the others.
EDit: Cut it after all,,
