Live shows

Post by funkmuscle »

Hey since this has been heating up in the music media, I wanted to see y'all take on it.
Me personally would hate to see an act using recording material as part of the the show. I grew up in an era where musicians were musicians and they'd improvise and not play the songs as recorded.
Imagine going to see Eddie Van Halen and have him sound like the record! Led Zep playing songs the way they recorded them. The Stones etc.
I remember seeing Prince live and he said on stage, ain't no recorded BS happening here. He said if you wanna hear me as on CD, stay home and listen to the damn CD!

Yes, intro music or things like for example, Vincent Price voice used on Iron Maiden's Number of The Beast.. Yes, that's recorded but then the band played live.

I'd hate to have the pressure of having a damn computer conduct the show.. Where is the intimacy with the audience? David Lee Roth in a drunken state chatting with the crowd for instance. He'd have a click track in his monitor telling him ok, times up, next song!

Music played live should be enjoyed by both the band and the crowd. A lively crowd gets you going. I don't wanna free that restrictions of a click in my in ear monitor.. Let the drummer be that. After all, ain't that the job of a drummer?

What ya'll think?

THIS IS JUST FOR DISCUSSION SAKE, NOT WHO IS RIGHT OR WRONG!

Just wanted to see where y'all are on this!

I can enjoy either way. My two favourite concerts last year were Martha Marlow, a beautiful, extraordinary, folk/jazz/classical singer songwriter who played with a 17 piece chamber orchestra.

The other one was a stadium concert with Sigur Rós, no introduction necessary for most of you. I'm sure they had backing tracks but the concert was awe-inspiring.
Of course, straight-up miming is a no-no.

Even hip-hop now they use musicians live, well some are. When I managed this hip-hop artist, everything was sampled but live, he put a band together after seeing how the crown go more into a live metal band we saw! He said that's what was missing and he was correct, with a band playing raw, no click the crown really enjoyed.

What I will never get used to as an old geezer is a computer on stage. If I see a band w/ a computer on stage on a festival, I go see another band. A Hip Hop act w/ a sampler does not need a PC either.

Grand Master Flash.
Look how they take away the labtop.

Maybe we need to start with differentiating between DJ's and Artist ?

Then we have Dj's with skills like grand master flash, and these days Dj's like miss monique.
Miss monique who puts an usb stick into the Dj thingy, and mostly turns knobs on high and low pass filters.

I do not have the same respect for her, as I do have for John Lord.
John lord is a totally different level.

Still I like to listen to miss Monique sometimes.

I also like this though, Public Enemy with Anthrax
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L0Lk38ew8s

Flavor flave of Public Enemy can actual play the drums. So that vid is not 100% faked.

Most or all of the mix is even prerecorded.
So it does not only look fake.

There are DJs who are also producers and make mixes and sometimes (omg) original tracks before appearing. That can be a little creative. I curse DJs who bring a USB stick full of stuff they just downloaded ie. stole, from the internet.
Years ago we had a band from Japan at our venue and one of them was set to play a DJ set before the band. Had a USB stick of MP3s but we spent ages trying to get our Pioneer CDJ to play it. Turned out our CDJ was a v2 which worked with wav files but MP3s weren't supported until the v3! Cue disappointment and no DJ set.

On a side note, there was a DJ at the swimming pool where I was doing laps last week, playing vinyl. I remember swimming in time to a great mix of Laid Back's "Fly Away". 8) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arT-wFTvKqY

I do generally prefer bands playing live, although a little tracks mixed in is not a turnoff.

That's rubbish. Smiling and waving hands around is not talent.

I used to think so too until I watched my friend in action.. the 'Smiling and waving hands around is not talent' is part of the act. Don't look at it from a musician's point of view or traditional musician when you are comparing things to say a guitar or whatnot.

Think of it as a conductor. These dudes need to mix with knowing the key, tempo and when to add or mash tracks together. You can say not musician in the traditional way but it takes mega talent to be a DJ. Just try it. :D

Yes, the one from Deep Purple.

Who played child in time a bit different every time he played it.

At least they don't try to hide the laptop behind a Midi keyboard and an 80's style sampler. If that was an act on a festival in the lounge or something I might actually enjoy it. For 15 minutes. A gig lasting longer than that for an audience larger than a bar should not get away with that.

I'm afraid you might have the misfortune of being about my age. DJ's like this appear to earn millions. Millennials admire their "talent" of choosing other people's music that "perfectly" fits a certain mood and has a certain build up. Those millennials do not realize that somebody with actual talent invested time in making said music. In the 80's a DJ would not show his or her face (more often than not that would have something to do with their acne, but I digress ). They did announce the records they'd play, though. Fortunately they stopped with that nonsense.
