Ironic Twist - "Doom Level" (Videogame music)

Post by Nachei »

https://alonetone.com/palmiro/tracks/doom-level

Here is a piece in which I tried to write a song following the conventions for a hypothetical level of my favourite game, Doom 2. Although I think that the real Midi songs of the game use soundfonts, and I stuck to my usual Yoshimi/Zynfusion.

Software used:

DAW:
Reaper

INSTRUMENTS:
Drumgizmo
Zynfusion
Yoshimi
TAL Noisemaker (via LinVST)
4Front Bass Module (via LinVST)

PLUGINS:
CHOWTapeModel
Steve Harris' Retro Flanger
Valhalla Delay (via LinVST)
Default Reaper plugins

Thank you for listening, I'm happy that you found that I captured the vibe of the game (at least I'm hoping that's what you mean by "you hear Doom in it", and not only because of the samples of the game I inserted... )

The song has now a video, with excellent pixel art by a fan. The video was made with Kdenlive.

Glad to hear it. I still play Doom almost daily, I'm a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to videogames... :)

Almost the first thing I install on any new pc is Doomsday. I'm replaying Doom, Heretic and Hexen once every few years. Oh, and if you liked Descent from the same era, check out Overload and thank me later for the tip.

I just bought Doom 1 and 2 at gog.com. (4 euros for both) Who want to pirate with prices like that ? :)

It seems I got more , also ultimate doom and Final doom.

Now will this work on openSUSE?

I might have to install Dosbox.

I never played the original, but did play and have Doom 3. I had Doom 3 working on openSUSE without wine.

Compile Doom (3) for Linux, and then copy over the maps, from your bought version.
I remember that the biggest problem I had, was to find my doom3 key in steam.

dhewm3 Source Port is what I used.

I might have to install Dosbox.

All those dooms work in Doomsday (which is in the ubuntu/mint repo at least) which is natively linux. Just put the .wads into the correct folder.

For Doom 3 I only had to copy some .paks from the cd's into the correct dhewm3 folder. no compiling necessary.

Steam also has Doom64 for pc. Also a good one..

I like the track and think it sounds Doom like.

Through Lutris I could not log in to gog.com. :?
I got Doom working. Downloaded the exe, but then open with dosbox did not work.

Open with wine does, but I am getting a white screen instead of what I presume should be some logo's.

Hit the spacebar and then the Doom game start menu pops up. I have to get used to it, no looking or aiming up or down.
Hangar 100% kills :D
Secrets found 0 :(

This is gonna be fun. I seem to be playing Doom1 enhanced.

Its too easy though, I might have to go for hurt me plenty. :)

I'm happy to see that I'm not alone in my archaic gaming habits... I still remember the first time I jumped out of the chair because a monster was getting too close... Doom really marked a before and after; and when it seemed it couldn't get any better, they opened it to community and people could create their own new levels, some of them even with brand new enemies!

@Impostor,
thank you for those games you mention, I'll check them out. I'm only familiar with Doom, Quake and Blood (I guess I'm a pretty basic gamer)...

@Gps,
glad you liked the track and found it "doomy"... The best luck I've had with Doom on Linux has been using the PrBoom engine; no need to dwell into DOS territory, and also it is very customizable (graphics and sound quality, if you want to maintain glitches from the original...) Just a mention to put the name out there...

Nostalgia is a powerful emotion. But it's not only nostalgia with those old games. They are simply good games. There's a reason Doom 2016 got made; plays a bit like a modern Doom II, with a bit of Serious Sam-like hectic insanity thrown in, and Serious Sam was already purposely old-school when the first one came out in 2001 or so.

I often feels games are looking better and better, but the game play is not improving.

Serious Sam bfg now that brings back memories, to the time Steam came to Linux.
I think I have, 1 and bfg.

Very disappointed Serious Sam 4 had no Linux port. :(

Seems to run fine with Steam's Proton though. (I've so far only installed SS4 and ran its benchmark.) I can also run most of my installed-with-wine-from-cd games with Proton via Steam; this gives me a much better user experience than running them with wine itself, e.g. I can play 640x480 or 800x600 resolution games full-screen with black bars on the sides, while with wine I can only play them in windowed mode.
