Help setting up my studio.

I need some help setting up my sound input. i would like to refrain from using the mic input as much as possible. I do have a plug that plugs into the 28 pin printer port. it has three pairs of left and right instrument jacks and two midi jacks. The thing i need help with is getting jack (or whatever would be better) to recognize this port as an I/O for sound. any help is much appreciated.
