Wherever, Whatever, Whenever

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey,
just in time for ringing in the new year and my mission:
https://youtu.be/bEt5mZ3FMDQ
https://www.dropbox.com/s/25qybs2snpknr ... enever.ogg
This is a... Glam rock? Symphonic rock? Power ballad? Well, a song about love and standing by your loved ones with a band, strings, a brass section and harpsichord. :) There are genes of Yes, power ballads, some 80s rock/pop, and more classiical things in it. Perhaps some musical... I don't know.
Instruments used, mainly LinuxSampler, Yoshimi and Drumgizmo. Two analogue hardware synths are buried in the mix.
Here are the lyrics, happy new year!

Sometimes you sky is grey
And clouds are all you see.
And when you lose your way,
Then there I will be.

For you I will brave the dark,
Even if I fail.

With you I'll face the gale!

Come, I will walk with you
Wherever the road may lead:
Whatever you're going through,
Whenever you are in need.

I'll be right by your side,
When you stumble and fall.
For you not shame nor pride
Will keep me from standing tall.

For you I'll brave the dark,
Even if I fail.
Not gloom of night, not snow nor hail
Can stay this messenger of love
On her way to you.
On my way to you. (I will be with you)
Whenever, wherever...

I'll be there.

Come, I will walk with you
Wherever the road may lead:
Whatever you're going through,
Whenever you are in need.

Hey, people, is everyone sleeping? This is absolutely a great track! Love the composition, arrangement and mix. But above all, the orchestral parts are very credible. I suppose you did not have access to a real orchestra so it's impressive you managed to get such a smooth soft-classical sound, in the best 90s neo-prog tradition.

The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. [Acts 4:32]

Hi,

no I wasn't sleeping. I had in fact already listened to this track a couple days ago; I just hadn't dropped a comment yet.

What especially got my attention was the drum sequencing. I liked that very much! Being able to lay down such a track is something I aspire to.

Hi @Impostor , also thanks for your kind words. The drums aren't actually programmed as such. I play them live and use quantisation to a degree after that. Actually, I now mix and match. Sometimes I play the whole kit at once, sometimes I work out the groove and play it in instrument group by instrument group. I very rarely program drums, much too cumbersome in my environment. The last time I purely worked on programmed drums was on my keyboards, when I was at school. :)
It's very gratifying to hear that this technique works out.
Best wishes, Jeanette

Hi @Basslint and many thanks again for such glowing praise. I'm happy you enjoyed this piece so much.

I used the VPO3 library again, augmented by a little synth string for the melody lines only, I find it helps. It was a great joy to work with these strings, since we were in accord on their strengths. :)
The brass and harpsichord are commercial. Still, they run in LinuxSampler and have done so for a while now.

Best wishes and thanks again, Jeanette

I suspect I may have been, since this isn't the only great track I've missed
Not sure if it's because of the holidays, or simply because I'm visiting less often than usual to check what's new. What's important is that I have listened to it now, and it really is a great track! The orchestration and sounds reminds me a lot of Renaissance, a band that if you know me you'll know means a great deal to me: same 70s/80s orchestral prog vibes, especially in thr gorgeous part at 3:05. The strings in particular are quite luscious. Fantastic job!

I am a fellow Renaissance fan, even though I have not listened to them in many years. +1 for mentioning them!

Oh, I mention them all the time, as they're one of my favourite bands ever! The whole "Delusion's Master" track was a love letter to them, basically.
