Studio monitors

Post by Gps »

I might happen next week if a friend of mine will come by, by car.

I will then go to a music store, to buy two ADAM TV5 and a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. :D

Saw a vid of unfa, so I know this should work on Linux, and I have seen it mentioned in topics here too.

Something about holding a button.

A bit worried about that short usb cable, my pc is under a table on the floor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zFA5piXf8Q

Does anybody know if I can connect my EPOS / Sennheiser GSP 300, gaming headset to the Focusrite?

A 3.5 to 6.3 adapter should make the headset speakers work, but the mike part of the headset ?

Would like to use the Focusrite also in gaming even-tough that is not why I am buying it.
Buying it for music production / mixing.

If my track sounds right both on the adam tv5 and the gaming headset, I must be doing something right.
Most gaming headsets boost the bass, so they are not ideal for mixing. :)

A Sennheiser studio headphone might not fit in my budget. :(

I have those monitors and I love them.

Use whatever you usually listen to music with for a secondary reference, you might not want to make decisions with them but you'll likely hear if something isn't right.

You can buy a longer USB cable.

Your headset mic will not work unless you get some kind of splitter to plug it into the Scarlett's mic input.

These Adam Monitors are really nice - together with some Focal ,Neumann, and Genelec the same size they were the best I've heard so far.

About the headset: I don't think you could use the microphone even with a splitter - those small electret mikes do not take 48V phantom power like "real" condenser microphones, but they still need a bit of current - don't know if a 1/4" jack would provide that, but I guess not. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electret_microphone

But you can of course still use the headset on its 3,5mm plug(s) for gaming, I also have the choice between a condenser mike on my audio interface or the built-in one from my webcam (via USB), they all show up as audio sources if/when connected. So in case you want to use the headphones of your headset on the audio interface and its mike on the 3,5mm input, that could be possible with some kind of adapter.

Now the last puzzle piece falls into place.

That 48V button was the last part.

https://www.eposaudio.com/en/nl/gaming/ ... et-1000238

For those who do not know, Sennheiser has sold some parts to EPOS.
The consumer audio part as Sennheiser calls it.

My previous headset was a Sennheiser GSP 300, my newest although exactly the same headset, has EPOS and Sennheiser as brands on it.

Its not a big deal for me if I cant use the mic of the headset.
I have made a shopping list with also a questions for the music store about that mic.
Lets see what they have to say about my headset and the Focus scarlett.

Using the headphone part should not be a problem. On my shopping list is also this:

https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Converts ... 490&sr=8-5

Putting the mic on my pc instead of the dac, might be a problem if I understand things right.

When you connect the focus, you disable the onboard sound of your pc. (I would not mind being wrong on this)
If not a 3.5mm extension cord should solve all. :)

Counting the days...

[drama queen mode]
Not sure how much my nerves can take. :P
[/drama queen mode]

Just got a confirmation, about the car part to go to the shop. (Thursday)

Then I ordered the speakers and the amp and payed for them.

They are however not in stock in the shop in my city.

Now I have to wait for another BAX music shop to send the stuff to the shop in Amsterdam.
I should get an email when they are there for me to collect.

The size of my country should help (Netherlands) From Goes to Amsterdam, 164 km/h.
They have 3 days, so for now I am optimistic.

Don't know if it is the stock size or the popularity of the Adam tv5.
They are always listed on the site but not always in stock, in all stores.

Once bought a midi controller there and asked if I could swap it, if it would not work on Linux.
Reply: We don't care why you want to return something, if your not happy with it, you can always return something.
(and get your money back)

Not necessarily - that's where Jack (or Pipewire) come in, with tools like Cadence or QJackCtl you can wire things like you'd like to have them - and there are bridges between Alsa, pulseaudio, and jack...

Did someone say ADAM TV5 ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qanun_(instrument) With midi it seems.

At first had found a cheaper set, brand divine. (amp and speakers)
I was how ever advised to not get divine, but get Adam tv5.

If I recall right, that was on this forum and on a dutch computer forum.

https://www.soundstorexl.com/products/5 ... -monitors/

For those tighter on budget , divine might be an option. It still should give a bit better sound then the onboard sound of your mobo.

Another solution can be, no amp. Just connect the studio monitors directly to your mobo.
With active studio monitors you can.

I would not advise cheaper speakers then the divine.
If this is still to much money you better buy a decent headphone / headset from around 100 euro.

Is it Thursday yet ? :P
Just read on their site, today (2 jan) the store is closed. They are doing inventory. They don't seem to care about my nerves.

Happy new year to all.

I've been thinking of getting speakers for my digital piano and a couple of synths. Would the Adam T5 be suitable? And would I need a subwoofer for the lowest notes?
(I'm just playing for myself mostly)

I think they will but best advice I can give, go to a music store and listen to them.

It all depends on your taste and your budget.

Some consider Adam TV5 a budget option. They must have a different budget then me though. :)

https://www.bax-shop.nl/studio-monitors ... r-per-stuk

175€ a piece. So 350€ if you want stereo.

They are active so you don't need an amp (dac).
I am getting a amp (dac) though, because I hope this will give a better sound, then the dac (chip) on my motherboard.

I think you might be ok without the sub. I can hear down to around 40hz on TV5s. There are high and low shelves so that might help of it's not low enough for you. I'm sure a sub would add to the realism but how much so is hard to say.

My shopping list should be done.

I just checked if I have enough power connections, and I don't.

Right now could only connect one of the speakers.

https://www.bax-shop.nl/230v-stroomverd ... -1-5m-zw-w

That should be enough for my pc, monitor, a dec phone, and the two studio monitors.

Site claims 1 workday for the not in stock speakers, so I should get an email tomorrow.

For now happy as a kid. :D

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but there's a reason the USB cable that comes with audio interfaces is the length it is. You shouldn't use a different length cable. Honestly, I forget all the reasons why but you should look into it. It'll likely make you reconsider doing so.

As a side not, I've previously used a Focusrite Scarlett interface with Linux (2i4 or something like that) and it worked perfectly. Now I'm using an Audient ID4 which I've used on about 5 different distros so far and it's also worked perfectly on them all so that's anther option for you
