here in Brazil it is verry, verry popular as "the first gear". Seems to be a good gear for the price. make sure to get Fast Track 2, as the first version didn't provide phantom-power

My brother-in-law has one. It's plug and play. Haven't tested it extensively though but it appears to be a usable device.

Very, very nice piece of equipment. This is my main soundcard now and it is absolutely fabulous, works out of the box and also very mini and cute - you can take it with you at any time.

I just bought M-Audio Fast Track USB (with knobs on top) saturday.
I have some issue:

- Alsamixer is not working with this device, my problem or alsa problem? How do you solve this?
- When I record my guitar with ardour or audacity I select from Jack the stereo channel and I get a stereo track with only one side recorded and the other one empty.
- Without Jack recording a second track with Audacity cause heavy noises.

The hardware configuration is:
Ibanez S270 -> Wah Pedal -> V-AMP2 (mode S1 - so L-R output activated with effects) -> M-Audio Fast Track USB -> Pc with Debian Sid and Alsa (no pulseaudio installed, onboard soundcard disabled from bios)

I use ardour and/or audacity.

Can you please paste the content of /etc/modules.conf and lsmod | grep snd ?
Also, are you sure that alsamixer show the control for m-audio fast track? It could show the controls for the onboard audio card...
Thank you in advance.

Sorry for the delay, i've been some buisy. So, /etc/modules.conf is blank and lsmod | grep snd shows this

Code: Select all

snd_usb_audio 94822 3
snd_pcm_oss 41576 0
snd_mixer_oss 17403 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 87267 4 snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss
snd_page_alloc 8820 1 snd_pcm
snd_hwdep 7056 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_usb_lib 20415 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_seq_dummy 1782 2
snd_seq_oss 31659 0
snd_seq_midi 6092 0
snd_rawmidi 23565 2 snd_usb_lib,snd_seq_midi
snd_seq_midi_event 7367 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi
snd_seq 58020 11 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_timer 23980 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq
snd_seq_device 6850 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq
snd 72910 16 snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_hwdep,snd_usb_lib,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device
soundcore 8625 1 snd
In alsamixer you can change device by pressing F6 so it actually does show the controls for the fastrack, plus i have disabled my onboard card.

if it has no internal mixer build in alsamixer can't show nothing, obviously. You don´t need alsamixer, you have your "mixer" at the device.

your guitar is mono  ....your device has two outputs? if so, one is for mic and other for instrument.

if it only happens without jack it's a latancy issue. use jack

Well, thank you all guys. I tried an Ubuntu live and I noticed that with pulseaudio there is a simple mixer (only master level for every channel, input1, input2, output) and it enable a mixer for the application in use, so I can change the volume for audacious for example. I installed pulseaudio on my debian (I removed it because I was unable to use a microphone with skype with pulseaudio... now I no longer use skype so...) and it works like ubuntu.
I didn't try to record (during the week I just study guitar, I have not so much time because I work) but I'll try tomorrow... I'll let you know about any progress.
